?\'s for the racers

how much money do you have in your bike? how much time do you invest in it? how long do your tires last? how often do you need to rip down the motor and rebuild it? if you are a club racer how long is the season last and how many weekends does it involve? im asking because i the near future i plan on club racing. thanks

Re: ?\'s for the racers

in glrra, we run 8 weekends, and on a 600 i can run 7 races a weekend, this consumes 2 sets of tires, 3 if i dont use tire warmers. bought the bike crashed for 2600 bucks, put 3 grand into it for ohlins shock, gold valve the forks, springs, bodywork, paint, dyno tuning, clipons, rearsets, and other things i know im forgeting... if you take good care of your bike, you wont have mechanical problems.... make sure you dont beat the piss out of it either, hitting rev-limiter and overrevving on downshifts will kill a motor quick... the motor im running right now in my r6 is a stock motor that had 9000 street miles on it before i started racing it... ill tear it down this winter to make it work like it shoulda from the factory
your first year wont be so expensive because your still learning and you can get by on a set of tires for an entire weekend... if you learn quick, the second year about doubles the expense... 2 sets of tires, 1 set of brake pads, lots more gearing for different tracks, buying tire warmers, generator, canopies.... you see what i mean... best thing is to get hooked up with a bike-shop and get them to give you a deal on parts, then go race a year to show them your into it, then try and get some kind of sponsorship from them... theres no way i could race if Full Throttle Motorsports in Lansing, MI didnt help me a little...

1. ~14k
2. every free minute
3. two pairs of tires every race weekend
4. never tore down a motor in three years now
5. season is from late April to early October. Usually 8-10 race weekends.

Re: ?\'s for the racers

10 race weekends @ $1000 per race weekend

bike and all the gear $20k

1st yr altogether 30k

2nd yr maybe 12-15K

just top the oil up and change tires

(web you are changing yr tires too often, iknow you run slicks maybe you should switch to dots)

its a commitment for sure

Re: ?\'s for the racers

Pabs, I do thursday and friday practice so that eats up the take-offs.

Also, two sets of tires a weekend isn't EXACTLY acurate. I buy a set of slicks every race weekend and a set of DOTs every other race weekend.

Its not so bad since we have Dunlop hooking us up.

Re: ?\'s for the racers

i use 2 sets a weekend, and keep the takeoffs for practice/dragstrip/burnouts

thats 7 races a weekend using tire warmers... i cant keep the pace i had going on new tires after a couple races so i just replace them...

pabsy- $1000 per weekend. holy shit dude. that is a scary figure how is it so much. ill never be able to do it for that kind of loot. i can see tires, travel gas to travel hotel ,food, entry fees,etc... but $1000 is quite a bit.

Re: ?\'s for the racers

You 4 stroke racers haven't a clue! If ya buy a 2 stoke GP machine be prepared for major expense! This is what my mate Jim spends (I help as pit crew)

Cost: approx $20,000 a year
Time: all of it
Tyres: At least 1 set of DOT's per race weekend (4x8 lap races)
Motor: Stripped and inspected after every race, new rings every 2 meetings, new pistons every 4, couple of rebores per season, new crank every 2 years (one was changed during the lunch break!)
Races: In 99 Jim only raced at one club, that was 7 weekends, in 98 it was 3 clubs so that was 21 weekends.

FASTESTONE was dead right, it takes all your cash, all your friends cash, and any other cash you can get hold of! I'm currently trying to secure sponsorship for Jim (I'm his self-appointed Team Manager
) and it's an uphill struggle, we get loads of good deals from various manufacturers, Dunlop give us tyres at half price, our tyre supplier pays the other half, we get bearings, gaskets, plugs and caps etc for cost from a local parts dealer, Rock Oil give us a hefty "racers discount" but we sell what we buy and use Silkolene instead! Oh, and a shop that specialises in 2 stroke race bikes do all the machine work and give us advice for free.

Hopefully you'll have a couple of people you can take with you for support!

I'm not a racer, but do have a good source for finding used bikes. If you want to find a used R6 or GSXR6, check out www.argocycles.com They have a lot of bikes available.

FYI, their site is down right at the moment. But still worth a look when it's back up.

Re: ?\'s for the racers

I bought my bike from Argo. They're just 20 minutes from the track so also good for last minute parts.

i don't care for the guy that runs Argo, but they do get a huge selection of used and wrecked bikes.

Re: ?\'s for the racers

tires - 500
entry fees (7 races) - 290
friday practice - 70
camping and weekend pass - 40
set of brake pads - 40
gas (travel + bike) - 70
oil/filter for the weekend - 40
food/beer - 60 bucks

thats 1110 bucks right there... plus whatever im forgetting... figure aside from that i got a trailer, generator, ez-up, tire warmers, shiteloads of tools, spare parts, spare rims, spare rain tires, spare helmet/visors... you can do it cheaper, running less races and skipping practice would bring it down to only a one day trip... less tires, less brakes, less gas, less everything really... and not crashing helps... average crash cost for repair is over a grand... (lowside) if ya highside, your gonna be looking at a couple grand pluss...

don't you think those figures are a little on the high side?? as long as you don't ruin your exhaust on lowside, what are you really gonna break that costs that much?

i bought my bike from argo and it supposedly only had plastic damage, it had a clean title and all. long story short i got fucked bad and now have $12000 into by used bike including 99frame and suspension. it was a learning experience. ill never buy used again, but that is just me. the frame was waxed which i found out when i brought it to gmd computrack to alighn the subframe(and found out the whole thing was messed up)so argo charged me up the ying yang for new frame and front rim.
