Hi gang, I currently own a 01 600, and for reasons I am embarrased to go into, I have to get rid of it in the very near future. I have been very depressed that I may be looking at an upcoming season with no bike.
HOWEVER!!! An older friend/roommate of mine stopped by tonight and is in a desperate financial situation and is willing to part with his 98 750 for just $2500!!
(I'll confirm tomorrow when he's sober, but i'm very confident it'll happen!) It's Blk/grey/purple, less than 4000mi., and bone stock. He doesnt even have his license and this bike has prolly tallied MAYBE 300 miles in the last 2 years(ever since I got my 01 we were always razzing him to get his license). So Since I'm not familiar with the older models, what should I be looking out for? What parts and components would bear immediate attention? I don't want to just jump on a bike that has been sitting for the last year and assume that I can just turn the key and ride! I'll be checking this section of the forums frequently now, but I need to get some information about this bike from the experienced owners like yourselves. I appreciate any help you might give!!
I am soooo psyched about this opportunity right now!!

the main thing on the 98-99s were the cam chain tensioner (CCT)....replace it with a manual one from APE and you should be ok with that....do a SEARCH on cct, and that would show you what to do...
other than that, i dont think there were any other major recalls or problems with the 98-99...

good luck

actually the only recall on the 98 model was the fuel lines inside the tank..the timming chain thing showed up in the 99 model..

Korn, Nah, I didn't lose a race. I have been unemployed for a few months and just cannot afford the payments on the 01 anymore. And truth be told, I did lowside it back in October and was going to need to do some cosmetic repair soon, so getting rid of it would prolly be a wise decision financially. (Although my pride is hating the reality of that decision). With the new job I've got coming up, scraping 2500 together over the next 4-5 months should'nt be impossible, and I can get back on the road!

Hehe, I was just going to post and ask wether or not the 98 was fuelie. You read my mind! As for the new job, I start in 2 weeks, and am very excited about it. My career has taken two steps back in the interest of moving forward, bigger company, more opportunity for growth, etc., Y'know? Now that my bike situation has found a solution, I'm looking forward from here on! Thanks for the tips guys!
