I have a 09' 750 the front tire went off the sidewalk a bit while trying to push the bike into the garage. So I grabbed it by the bars and pulled it back up, when I did the left handle bar just went limp... completely loose so I inspected it and it's not broken. So I loosened the bolt, and slid the bar back up and into position. I tightened it all the way down, and then when I leaned on the bars it just loosens right back up... not sure what's happening and I am a complete noob. I just bought the bike, and I have never done anything to a motorcycle mechanically...I'm not sure if I'm just putting the bar in the wrong place, or what is going on. I straightened up the wheel and tried to position the clamp at the same angle that the throttle side is positioned at, I pulled it all the way up as high as it would go.

UPDATE: i fixed it when i went out to take pictures, I realized that there was a hump on the clamp that went up into a slot in the triple tree to line it up. Then i just cranked it down as hard as I could... (I was scared at first to tighten it to hard because I am notorious for snapping heads off of bolts.) but all good now thanks guys hope this helps anyone that has the same issue!

Using a standard hex key (like in the tool kit) tighten the bolt to a firm pull by hand (no extra leverage). This should be close to torque.
A torque wrench is a must for bike maintenance, One with a range @ 20Nm to 80Nm will cover most bolts on a bike.

I had a friend who ruined TWO sets of calipers (the originals and the replacements I bought him as a present) on his '04 750 by torquing the bleed screws to the point of stripping them.

It's a clip-on. No offense but if you need a torque spec to know when to stop tightening, you probably shouldn't be wrenching your bike... like my caliper-destroying friend.

These days all the spanners come in a long series (extended) The old combination spanners I have in my kit are much shorter. Not short series, just STD. This is a trap, for small bolts, and aluminum fittings.
For the novice, torque it, then see if you can move it tighter by hand. (wrist torque)
