It's really badass when I see people pop a wheelie and hold it there for a while. I never really put much time into learning how to wheelie and was wondering is it really a difficult feat to accomplish? I'm more of a weekend warrior when it comes to riding. How long did it take you guys to learn how to wheelie? I ride a GSXR1000 and I can pop a quick power wheelie about 1ft. high, but I'm a little afraid to go further. Any tips? Thanks!

Power wheelies are inconsistent and don't give you as much control as clutching it up IMO. Plus when you power wheelie you have to be doing stupid speeds and waste revs bringing it up.

Start out slow and just practice doing little wheelies with the clutch until you get comfortable with the feeling. You always want to cover the rear brake and use it to control your height as to not loop it. Also when you bring the front down don't close the throttle just bring it down gently with the rear brake.

That being said learning to wheelie on a 1000cc is not the way to go. To expensive and severe repercussions if you loop it. Go get a cheap dirt bike and go out in a field or something and learn on that..much safer and will teach you much more

I went through that phase 30+ years ago and thought I was pretty bad ass at the time. I wheelied everywhere, just because.

It was on a brand-new Ninja 1000R - fastest bike in the world at the time. First bike I ever wheelied cuz it was my first bike that had any balls. It's a miracle I never dropped it. Would have broken my heart... plus however many bones.

As has been said, don't tempt fate, buy something cheap / safe to learn on and do it where you won't kill yourself or others.

Good luck :cheers

In a t-shirt, sneakers and a $50 P.O.S. Kiwi helmet, no less. :facepalm

Have seem a few "wanna-bees" try and do the 1 wheel stand, 1 guy dropped the CBR 600 and knocked a hole in the engine case, pretty much wrote the bike off..
Moto-sickles have 2 wheels, maximum control when both wheels are in contact with Terra-firma..
nuff sed..

Truth. Love riding wheelies on my mountain bike.
Yup. Come out of a berm, pedal hard and shift back to lift the front wheel and come out of it banked over and doing a wheelie.

I could never wheelie for shit on my mountain bike, although that might be because I never really got into trying.

Shit, bike season is upon us soon and I owe my bike EVERYTHING. I let my chain go too long last season so I need a new chain / cassette /chain rings. Bottom bracket bearing too and all new cables.

I have been on motorcycles since I was 6. I used to ride a Yamaha FZ1 which I could wheelie a mile on. Me and that bike hit a guard rail at about 80mph. Now I ride a gsxr750, and while I can still wheelie forever on my dirt bike, I don't even wheelie on my 750, she's too pretty to hit the ground. It's all fun till you hit the pavement. You're much safer with both wheels on the ground.

I love watchin bikes wheelie. I'm too old to do them. Skin don't grow back so good now.
There's a hump in an intersection close to home. Most times I will get some good air launching over it. Get some funny looks from oncoming cars.

If you rev to redline while in first and drop the clutch, you'll do the most badass wheelie people have ever seen. On a Ninja 250

I used to have a TL1000R that was a torque MONSTER with a short wheelbase and a 17/45 sprocket setup. I could wheelie that thing anywhere, anytime. I started out doing wheelies on an old CR250, but that TL was something totally different. I made the mistake one time of trying to power wheelie it and it almost looped me. Hit the rear brake and it slammed down. HARD. Scared the shit out of me. Literally. I was clinched for a few miles until I got to a McDonald's. So from that point on, I clutched it up and was able to control it better. My advice would be to find a wide open parking lot, wear your gear, start off slow by popping the clutch in second gear around 5k rpm and make sure to always cover the rear brake!

I've clutched up my 600 and my 1k a few times. Maybe got 1' off the ground. I'd love to be able to bust out a wheelie whenever I wanted. I never really committed to learning because a mistake could cost thousands of dollars. If I had a bike I could afford to lose, I'd probably have more luck. The risks are just too high for me.

+1 I prefer both wheels on the ground. It cost me way too much and I love my bike way to much to risk dropping it. I've picked the wheel up maybe an inch shifting into second once or twice but that's all I got in me.
