I'll be cataloging my progress here... it's going to be kinda like a low slung chopped rat rod, but designed and built more like a race car. I am a day or two from welding the frame together, I have an old LS5 chevy 454 that is going to be around 500 hp, and I'll be using a 4 speed super T10 out of a mid 70's trans am. I'm using an 8.8 late model mustang rear end (3.27 posi) as well.

here are some pics of the concept, and the project thus far.

I can't wait to see this thread in 2015. Why not use an electric motor.

because they don't sound cool... :lol

I already have an idea about an electric sports car, hand crafted body aka 60's style ferrari gto's..... but that is a project for another day...

The engine is going to use the stock oval port heads, but I'll be using a hydraulic roller cam (.550 lift) and roller tip rockers. It will have lakester style headers that I will build, complete with removable baffles. I'll be using an edelbrock RPM airgap intake, and an 850 cfm holley carb.. compression will be around 9.5:1 which is about the most you can go on these cylinders and combustion chamber design without detonation. I should be in the 500 hp 500 ft*lb region.... :biggrin

that and a rolling weight of around 2700 lbs with a 4 speed should be mildly entertaining to drive... :burnout

Wow man thats a really fuckin sweet project! Make sure you take plenty of pics along the way so we can watch the progress from start to finish

How much experience do you have in this area? I only ask because your rear end suspension mounting seems a little suspect, are you planning on just running bolts through the frame to attach your links? If so I would rethink that, the stress put on a rear end with 500 hp will make short work of those frame rails if not properly gusseted. If it were me, I would get some 1/4" thick plate, cut it to fit at the top and bottom of your frame, and then drill holes through both sets, thus making your suspension adjustable. With a little ingenuity you could still create your offset 4 link setup to keep from needing a panhard bar in the case of a traditional straight 4 link setup. Other than that though, it looks good so far.

lol, we have a little bit.. there are going to be solid bars welded in those holes that 3/4 rod ends will bolt to. look at the top down view in the CAD drawing... those are solid bars welded in the frame. My dad built an 8 second big block altered that launched with a transbrake at 7000 rpm with 5/8 rod ends in the rear, and the car is still making passes to this day (was built in the 80's)

Also, my dad is a retired electrical/mechanical engineer who has built multiple street rods and race cars. I am also currently a senior year mechanical engineering student at UCF and I have done a stress/strain analysis on the rear components, and they appear to be very beefy... much stronger than the 7/16 bolts and stamped control arms the stock mustang uses..

also, the frame is 2x4 3/16 wall A500 tubing... I don't think it's going anywhere. I am making this beefier than anything of similar design and power I saw at the turkey run in daytona this year....

also, I forgot to mention that the floor of the body (I am making my own body/roll cage) is going to consist of 1x2 1/8" wall rectangular tubes that are going to be notched and fit "over" the frame rails (across the frame from side to side), having one about every 12 inches, from the firewall all the way to the back... so the frame is going to be heavily tied together once everything is in place.

That's a damn big project to be taking on.
Looks very similar to a car that a friend of mine built.

yeah, that style is the inspiration, but mine will be a little more user friendly.

those slammed ones look tough, but there just isn't any room, and I think the airbag thing is kinda gay.... :dunno
