i just bought an 03 gixxer 600 from a friend with 9k miles for 4g. i wasnt gonna go this nice for a first bike but i wanted to save the hassle of trading it up and stuff. i just read all the stickies and saw teh rash pictures and its got me a little worried. i know what teh bike is capable of and have reespect for it but i just wanted to get you guys thoughts on how to go about surviving teh first few months... btw i got full gear, helmet, gloves, jacket and i don plan on ridin w/o them even in 100 degree heat...just postin up as a newbie...what u guys think...thanx

And congrat on your bike. Even tho you know it isn't the greatest as a first timer, you are aware of what if, but or nor....

anyways, beside that... take MSF if you haven't and find someone who know rides and hope they could teach you a thing or two. If all things fails, sign up for some track time.

If the bike doesn't have them already, get frame sliders. Just be careful.

you got the right attitude, your got all your gear, and respect the bikes power, take the MSF course and you should be fine

thanx everyone....btw i have taken the basic safety course, and im going back for the advanced one now that i have my bike... i put a rear seat cover on so i have an excuse not to have passengers....it also has frame sliders....im gonna use it as my daily transportation (weather depending) to work which is 2 miles each way.... so i think ill be getting use to it fairly quickly....btw the bike has a salvage title hence the low price but i had it checked out by 4 good shops so i felt confident with it... its stock as welll....thanx everyone for the advice..makes me feel good joining the forum...peace

You really should have asked for advice BEFORE buying a bike. But now that you got it, and the gear, just be sure you always wear your gear, and take the MSF course before you even try to ride that thing. Get frame sliders for when you drop it.

And be sure you ride more than just the 4 miles for work every day.

I don't see how you can learn quickly if that's all the riding you're gonna be doing.

Good luck! Sounds like you are on the right track. Be careful out there! Respecting the bike and acting accordingly is very important, but also keep in mind that you can only control what you are doing. Expect people driving around you to do hair-brained things..so plan ahead for those times as much as possible.

Welcome nix. My first bike was a GSXR600. If you respect it and know your limits, it's no more dangerous than any other bike IMHO. My one piece of advice is to not ride with hotheads. Most new guys have a tendancy to push themselves beyond their skillz either trying to keep up or trying to show off. Take it slow!
