I had an 87 1100 (granted with 90 1127 motor in it, but an early 1100 chassis anyway), and I can report that this bike is still fast. It ran in the high 10's in the 1/4 if I recall correctly, which is still respectable today - not superfast, but fast. The chassis was OK at the time, but certainly mods like inverted front end, and perhaps a more recent swingarm (never did that one myself) will assist in the handling department. I would suggest swapping the wheels out for 17 inchers, just so you can tap into the wonderful newer tires.
Think of it as 75-80% of the functionality of the newer bikes, at about 30-45% of the investment!
Wish I never sold that 1100....
