If the engine is sitting on my bench is there a trick to getting at the gears. In other words does the top end need to come off the engine and then split the lower end?

I will order the shop manual soon I am just wonderin what fun awaits me.

You should be able to separate the cases without removing the top end, although the shop manual will tell you to strip the whole engine. You will still have to remove parts which are joined to both cases like bearing retaining plates, stator plate, clutch assembly, oil pump and anything else you can find. Remember if they dont seperate after a light tap with a soft mallet/hammer don't force them, just re check everythings disconnected. Depending on your gearbox symptoms its worth taking off your clutch cover and checking the gear change mechanisms OK before you go in for the kill.Hope this is of help.
Good Luck.
