Helped a buddy retro a set of 95 gixxer 36mm carbs on his 86 this last week. He had some POS 34mm flat slides that were Way to small before. The bike is running low end better than it has since he bought it now. The only problem is at about 8,000 RPMS under wide open, it falls on its face and seems to be running out of gas. Are the jets to small? Thanks in advance for any help.

Just a wild stab in the dark but is he using the stock gas tank valve? If so, might be time to invest in a Pingel valve to meet the increased demands of the larger carbs.

Well, main jets are cheap (3 or 4 bucks apiece) and it certainly won't hurt anything to go richer... lean burns pistons, rich just fouls plugs. Play with it! Most shops that do any tuning at all will have a supply of jets on-hand and if you're friendly with the guys, they'll usually let you just trade your old jets for the bigger ones (unless they are running out of the size that you need). In any case, you can buy mikuni main jets just about anywhere... I'm sure that Chip at Ron Ayers would be happy to hook you up.

Keep in mind that when you make changes in the main jet size, it *will* affect the midrange and to a lesser extent, the bottom-end... get the main jet size figured out *first* and then see about getting the midrange, bottom end, and idle sorted out.
