Good afternoon all,

I'm new to the forum so please be gentle....and if you cant be gentle please make it amusing :)

I'm soon to be the proud owner of a 1992 GSXR1100M albeit it is in a rather sorry state and requires a lot of TLC to get it back to its former glory. But, I've never been afraid of a bit of elbow grease and scuffed knuckles hence taking the challenge on.

There's lots to do but before I submerge myself in a full restoration (bikes to keep by the way not 'do up and sell on again' as I have always wanted one) I wonder if the collective would be kind enough to answer a few questions regarding potentially making it into a 7/11 rather than keep it stock ? :-

1) Would the 1100 tank and seat unit fit a 750M model frame ? If not what mods would be required ?

2) What mods are required to fit a M model 11 engine into an M model 750 frame ? I understand the rear engine mount will need modifying but unsure on anything else ?

3) Are there any other issues in doing this swap ? (electronics, fuel taps and lines etc)

There will likely be plenty more to ask but for now that seems a reasonable start.

I'm torn with the option of keeping it as an 11 or doing a 7/11. My head tells me keep it 'as is' but my heart says 'why the hell not'!!!! If its fairly straight forward and I may go the 7/11 route but if it means far too much messing I will just restore it.....because I don't want to delay riding it for too long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Mike and welcome
The barrel assembly is about 10mm taller on the 1100, so the carbs will sit a little higher - so the 1100 fuel tap is forward to that of the 750, but the tanks will fit. The seats from 750m and 1100m/n should be the same, along with the seat side panels and light etc.
The rear engine mount bolts on the 1100 are 10mm and 12mm (lower mount) - I can't remember if the late 750 had 2mm smaller lower mounts.... not a major problem though.
The 7/11 probably works better on the early models, as the frame was much lighter and made a bigger difference. The late 1100s suffered from more weight and poorer suspension than the 750 (750 had shorter swingarm too). With better suspension and a weight loss program the 1100 can handle very nicely - I went down this route and the bike feels better than I could've hoped, I did go a bit mad/obsessed...….it happens ! - went past my 80lb target by 20lbs, it's not a heavy now.

I don't know but you have options - smarten it up as a stocker...... gradually evolve it as a modded 1100..... or create a 7/11 as a street sleeper (750 decals and 1100 power - always good). You'll need to make sure the suspension, tyres and brakes are decent before you can have real fun, the bikes are pretty old now.
Whatever, have fun, the oil cooled GSXR's are nice to work on and they're a cool old bike to own.

Thanks for advice.

I've decided to stay with it as an 1100.

The strip down is in progress. The usual things have reared their ugly heads :-

- Both seat panels have lugs missing in various places. They can be fixed. Anyone out there with advice on this ?

- Another ball ache is the rear shock is....how can I put this politely....F##ked!!!I'm reading so many different things about swapping for later model SUZUKI rear shocks such as BUSA's and GSXR1000's. Again any advice on this or links to previous threads would be much appreciated.

Those lugs are sods for breaking off - if there's enough material left you can put a small screw into the right area and build up a new lug with a good epoxy resin - then sand it to shape.
I would look out for a decent second hand after market shock, you know it'll fit and will be better quality too - our bikes' shocks are old boys now - the engines last a lot better than the suspension units.

Similar situation as you, my 750K is in a pretty sorry state (at least appearance wise) as well and I plan to do it up and keep it. Starting with a 750 I'm definitely inclined to go the 7/11 street sleeper route though... Modern forks and rear shock are definitely on the to-do. I hear the BMW shock is a good budget friendly alternative, not sure if that applies to the M as well.
