Hi guys,

New to the forum here but been around bikes for over a decade.. tinkering and modifying my two TRX850, breaking or fixing & selling bikes and generally keeping on top of maintenance on my daily rides.
During the first lock down (March/April 2020) I decided to build a 1996 GSXR 750 carby from the ground up for track use only and have done two track days on so far.. first one was a bit epic due to a few bolts & screws falling off :ROFLMAO: + a duff battery. The second one was awesome & stress free without a single spanner or screwdriver being used but I noticed two issues however..

1. The bike is running rather hot (between 95/105 degree celsius).. first day was hot-ish with 25/27 celsius but second day was fresher at around 18/20 celsius. Rad, hoses, thermostat etc are stock, they look clean & in fair condition for the age, coolant is new (standard Putoline product which I use on all my bikes). I've checked for air bubbles in the system after the first track day.. leaning the bike from left to right, squeezing hoses etc. yet still ran hot on the second track day. Is it normal? What am I missing?

2. Second issue is around the voltage & charge whilst running.. I have a volt meter display connected to the battery which shows an accurate 12.8V for the battery when the engine is off (new battery & voltage cross checked with a volt meter). When the engine is running & idling, the voltmeter display approx 13/13.2 volts charging however, when running, the voltage drops to between 12.5/12.7 volts at around 7000rpm. Electrics isn't my forte but I would expect the voltage should keep in the 13 volts + whilst riding.. what should I start checking/testing to get to the bottom of the issue?

For info, I am based in the UK (SW London) and the track in question is Brands Hatch.

Cheers,
Adrien

Temp seems normal when is the fan kicking in.
Charging systems on these are well known.
Check it as per manual, weaknesses coming up from the stator 3 wires to block connectors check for burning\corrosion ( done away with mine hard soldered ) next block ( mine melted ) same hardwire clean all connectors .

From memory, the fan kicks in at 106/107 celsius which is standard behavior from what I read.

As for the connectors, I already re-did the three block one from the stator. Seems I need to continue & work my way up the loom then, checking/cleaning/replacing accordingly.. fun times ahead! :geek:

Are stators known for getting weaker over time on these? Or other elements/components on the loom?

Yes fan @ 106/107 ( mine is usually 106 ) my 600 totally did away with the connectors & hardwired. As you say fun times ahead, whole harness, cover with dielectric grease to future proof.
As for the stators they will weaken & like everything else have a certain lifespan.
98 SRAD charging problems....HELP Please!

Great stuff, I'll stop worrying on the temp then and get cracking with the loom & connectors! (y)

Disclaimer: electrical stuff is not my forte either, but I had a '93 ninja and I accidentally killed the battery once. Had some place to be so I jump started it and away I went. The alternator never charged the battery I guess because it was all the way dead (I hear this is really bad for the charging system too, by the way). It ran fine but the temp gauge was pegged all the way hot. After doing some research I think the gauge was reading wrong because it didn't have the proper voltage. I replaced the battery and everything went back to normal.

In my case the charging issues and the temperature issue were both caused by a toasted battery. Could it be that simple in your case?

I realize you said the battery voltage is good, but I've always heard if you run one all the way dead the battery is possibly ruined. If that's true and why is a little over my head, but something to think about.
