That sounds like a big step. There are issues like c-c length. Have you tried a softer spring?

The new shock from the 17-20 model will have the same STD spring as your current bike. SO, no difference.
Lighter/softer spring will work on your bike or Suspension Tuning done buy a specialist.

85kg?
The factory shock should be just right for your weight
I'd suggest checking if the shock doesn't stick, or that the linksystem hasn't seized

Spring pre-load for your K8. The manual says, Shock Length, 156.0mm (hardest) to 166.0mm (softest).
Outside these measurements the shock won't work the way it was designed to.
As Mb says, Definitely need to check/ re-grease swing-arm and linkage on your 12 year old GIXXER. (y)
An easy check is :- with wheel off and shock out, feel the movement and the play in the swingarm.
Racetech's website has lots of info.

If you're capable setting up suspension, but the shock is still too hard, the only things left are either
-Personal preference (but you really don't want to decrease shock stiffness below a certain point that handling becomes dangerous)
-Mechanical function, in which case, the shock (or linkage) simply needs refurbishing/replacement

I'm 65 kg on a K5, didn't have trouble with the rear shock with my weight
The front OTOH had trouble with sticktion, giving me sore wrists no matter how I tried to change settings

Using a different shock from another model may remove your complaints, but you won't know if you can get it to fit and what it will do to the suspension geometry/load
