Hi there,

I am new here.
I have a question regarding the petrol tank of my 1986 GSX-R750. I am currently finishing my rebuild and I am thinking about removing the bump for the air venting. I would build in the fitting for the tube flat on top of the tank. My question is now: does anyone know what exactly the function is of this bump? Is is just there to avoid spillage? (Please excuse my english, I am Austrian).

I had another petrol tank that was too rusty to use and checked how it would look like:

Thanks!

if you cut that bump in half you will see there are a series of baffles to keep fuel from sloshing out the breather. If you are going to go that far, you could cut out the fuel cap as well and switch to a vented fuel cap so no breather would be required. Personally i like the bump as its one of the unique features of the early GSXR.
Thank you, makes absolute sense. I'll stick with the bump anyway...

well yea its funcional, its going to keep fuel from splurging out when the tank is full.. I wouldn't do it unless you plan on running only 1/2 tank or so for racing whatever, get her hot one real hot day, hit a bump, fuel splurges out drips down to engine you may catch fire?

if you eliminate always keep the fuel about at least an inch below that straight line
thanks, my thoughts as well.. but considering the risks, I'd rather keep the bump..
