So, some of you may know that I'm finishing up a restoration of an old race bike. One of the things you learn along the way is that these things changed a lot over the course of a season. And, there were differences between the 'A" bike and "B" bike at any given event. So, one of the choices you have to make is, which version/event do you restore it to?

For more years than I care to think about, a normal Blue/White "humped" tank has sat on this thing. Now I figure out that it more often seems to have been run with a flat topped tank. Woohoo.

The question I ask, before I go looking for one of these things to buy is this:

DID SUZUKI SUPPLY A BLUE/WHITE '87 750 WITH A FLAT TANK IN ANY MARKET?

I speak of color code 9HE (not the "other blue/white scheme that was apparently used in some markets, like Japan - color 9UY) which is the "normal" blue/white scheme most of us are familiar with. I have found a part number 44100-28A60-9HE listed in some markets, which is different than the part number I think was used here in the US for Non-California '87 blue/white tanks, 44100-28A50-9HE. This makes me think that a blue/white '87 flat top tank might exist, but then I have seen that the blue/white '87 in the Japanese market had a humped tank, so now I wonder... if the Japanese market had a humped tank in 1987, did everybody?

Some of you knuckleheads live in Canada and others in Europe, so I figure that if these things exist, you'd know it by now. I know they had them in '85 and '86, so let's stick to '87 models.

What say you?

Interesting. So you're quite positive then, that all first Gen bikes had the flat top tank in Canada...

I think the color schemes between the US and Canada were the same, therefore there should be a blue/white '87 750 tank with a flat top, out there somewhere.

Any of you Canadians have a blue/white 87 750?

Howdy Mike,

Long time, no chat...

So, the pictures that you posted... The '87 with the JDM color scheme 9UY in post 5 shows a flat topped tank. But the '87 with color code 9HE in post 6 has the humped tank...

Another question... did all of the flat-topped tanks have the slightly raised area around the filler cap, that (I guess) they thought would simulate where a double dry-break fueling set-up would go? See red arrow in the photo below:

Has been a long time Jeff, but I'm still above ground!

I have always found it near impossible to get the correct info on those flat-top tanks with the 'endurance' bump. As far as I know, all F model and G (non-US) models had the 'flat' flat-top tanks. The 'endurance' bump flat-top tank seems to appear mostly in the JDM H models; but I have also seen pictures of JDM H models with normal flat-top tanks.

I think all flat top tanks are part# 44100-27Ax0-xxx with the xxx=7JK (red/black) or 7GF(white/blue) being the most common. As noted, there are other variations of the xxx for various models like the LTD, Endurancer, JDM G models, etc.

There should be at least 6 variants of the hump tank, but I can only find 4 - the 28A50-7JK/9HE or 28A60-7JK/9HE for the E22 model (West Germany). The Cali models would be something like 28Ax0-7JK/9HE I would imagine but I can't find the info for those.

I increasingly find that staying above ground is a good plan. Keep on keepin' on...

That observation about the endurance bump seems to jive with what I've seen.

So, I'm back to my original query, which is, has anybody got an '87 Blue/White bike (not the JDM blue/white version) with a flat topped tank? Got a picture of one? I have neither...

I suspect that I'm going to have to find a clean flat-topped tank in some other color and just repaint the lousy thing, but hope springs eternal that these things may exist.

This is what I'm looking for.... Painted this way from Suzuki? Repainted from an '85 or '86 tank?

The picture you have posted is the tank from an '85 JDM (GR71F). There should be plenty of those, but to find a good one for sale is always problematic. They are different in construction to the ROW models in that they have a large opening in the base for the fuel level sender unit. You will know that the JDM models had a fuel guage as standard.

Also, if you find a good ROW 750 flat top for sale, let me know!!

Also, I don't think I stated this before and there may be someone out there that will say it's not so, I'm reasonably sure, all ROW H models (GR75A) had the humpy tank, and all the JDM H models (GR71H) had a flat-top tank.

Humpy tanks for the H model:
44100-28A50-7JK/9HE - ROW
44100-28A80-7JK/9HE - California
44100-28A60-7JK/9HE - E22 model

How can you tell that the tank in the picture is from an '85 and how can you tell that it's from the Japanese market?

I'm guessing that you are looking at the stripe size and color?

The colour scheme is definitely the one used for the JDM model for that year. Also, the F model, both ROW and JDM were the only models that had the "'R-hyper sports' decal mounted horizontally. All the others, except the '84 pre-production model, had that decal slanted parallel to the striping of the tank

Thats a humpy. So I have only 3 flat-tops and all are repaints. 2 8JW's for my 86 1100 and one in a blue metallic that I would sell. Four humpys in variable shape, bought from a 1100 view and all from the US.

Thanks to Ozboy, I am no longer trying to answer this question. It turns out that Yoshimura actually used an '85 JDM tank at times on their '87 bike and, after researching some historical photos, it looks like they used both that tank and a humped tank in races during 1987.

85-86 flat tank,87 hump tanks in Canada,i have a few flat tanks,hard to come by these days,those hump tanks are so ugly,
