Well, I think I screwed myself over by purchasing this bike. I know nothing about motorcycle engines, so I'm lost. I've had this bike for only three days now, 2007 GSXR 600 (20,000 miles). I've been riding it hard, like how a GSXR should be rode :grin2:

But, today when I decided to go out for a ride I was greeted with a terrible sound. Engine knocking/scraping. It does not increase when I rev the bike. The noise is coming from the left side of the engine.

Video of the issue: streamabledotcom/b0fqn (please replace the "dot" with a ".", I'm sorry if I am breaking forum rules upon posting this, I just have no where else to turn to.

Can someone who is knowledgeable of these bikes please give me some insight on what this might be. I more then likely won't be working on this myself. I just need to figure out what it could possibly be to figure out the cost of this issue. I just purchased the bike and am running low on funds (lol). Any help/advise is appreciated. Thank's y'all.

Idunno about a lemon but judging from the general condition of that poor bike, either it has 'a little more' than 20k miles on the clock or those were some pretty cruel miles.

Someone should chime-in soon about the noise.

I ran it by my mechanic...I don't think it was anything obvious.

I can't tell for sure, but it seems to be coming more from bottom end of engine. I would have said cam chain as its a common issue on GSXRs but the noise is on left of engine not right.

Since it doesn't increase with revs its not a reciprocating part which is a good thing.

Could it be something as simple as a loose output drive sprocket which is rattling in the casing?

Sorry...Its hard to know without being there....If you're not mechanically inclined enough to strip down and diagnose, you need to tow it to a good mechanic.

Not a noise I can recall ever hearing coming out of a GSXR. That little black cover with the 3 bolts on it you kept touching is the starter motor gear behind it. There's a thrust spacer and washer that are in there and maybe possible someone took it apart and left something out when putting it back together? I believe it only spins when you start the bike up and not while its running since that gear isn't not sitting in oil constantly. I would start there by pulling the cover off and inspecting all the parts you take out and verify that it has everything you see in the parts fiche. I've had some headaches with getting those things installed and lined up properly myself from time to time.

07 600 with 20k miles and a stunt cage isn't a lemon.

That being said, get your service manual and remove/reinstall the starter.

I can't help but think that sounds alot like an issue I had. The previous owner of my bike put a new stator and rectifier on the bike and he didn't loctite the stator bolts. One backed out and was rubbing. Made a horrendous fucking noise. I too initially thought it was a cam chain tensioner. I swapped that to no avail. I can't help but notice a glimpse of bright yellow stator wires that seem a bit too clean and vibrant to match the overall condition of the rest of the bike and it also looks, although it was just a fleeting glimpse, like they are not routed in the normal factory routing. This tells me it's entirely possible that your previous owner did the same thing....

I guess I removed the video? Dunno but post #34 is me finding the solution. Read up a couple posts to see the symptoms.

You will see in the pics attached to post #34 the bolt backed out and was rubbing on the rotor as the crank spun.

For what it's worth. The starter gear is also under that same engine cover and is a bitch to put back in sometimes. They could have just the same botched the starter gear placement when replacing the stator. Pop that cover off and have a look see. By the sounds of it, it should be easy to identify. Look for ground metal. Lol

You will likely need another gasket too.

Yup, you were right! It was one of the three stator bolts. Thank god.
