Any Anti-Virus gahbage running in the background?
McAfee sucks arse and causes issues like that sometimes.
Otherwise, maybe you scored a virus.
Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and see what you have running.
Let me know if you see anything unfamiliar.

loadqm (component of MSN Messenger tells you when you've got hotmail and tells your buddies when your online *I think*)
cpunumber (not important)
uptray (unknown)
systray (duh)
wsloader (not important)
dmbkey (unkown)
cd_load (THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM)

Please follow these instructions.
1: End task on this POS.
2: Go to Start, Find, Files or Folders, search for CD_Load on C:
3: Delete CD_Load.exe
4: Start, Run, msconfig, Start-Up tab.
5: Look for CD_Load.exe in that list, take the check out if you find it.
6: Apply, Ok, Restart.

Enjoy.

CD_Load is part of some bullshit ass snoop-ware.
It got installed when you installed something else. It usually comes with little games and shit like that. It installs itself without telling you, then hogs your system resources and sends information about what you do to it's manufacturer. Cool stuff eh?

Snoopware

One more thing.
Change any system passwords you have because they have all most likely been captured by now.
Oh, and maybe check out Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and see if you can uninstall it. Otherwise, follow my previous instructions.

Blaise: right on.
Jon... anytime your PC runs like that shut her down. Ask questions later. An admin at the keyboard is your best defense.
You are tuned into your rig Jon, you have the best sense of when she's not feeling well or being molested.

Great advice Blaise, do you know if there is a list out there of other possible resource hogs/ snoopware ie..HP's have that darn webagent that’s a pain.
I had similar trouble at home, but "fixed" it by installing a program that lets me pick and choose my startup programs, and keeps an image of your setup so you can go back if you mess it up. but I'd like to know what to uninstall permanently.

Thanks!

For anyone else out there who may be having issues similar to this.
Here are some easy steps.
If you're running Win95/98/ME, hit CTRL+ALT+DEL
write down all the crap you see in that list.

Then, go out on the net to www.deja.com and search for each one individually.
Most things are normal, but a lot of times you will find things like what Jon here had.
Deja is an invaluable resource that I could not live without at this point.
When you and people you know are stumped, 5 years of newsgroups piled into a search engine is a savior.
