Chrome See-Through Stator Cover Leak Fix?

Hi all,

I’m a proud owner of an 06 GSX-R600. I bought this beautiful see-through, chrome stator cover off of eBay from China for about $60. My mechanic keeps telling me to just swap it for a stock cover because these things are known to leak. He’s tried so many things to fix it. But it always finds a way to leak.

So here are my questions:
1. Is it common for these things to always leak?

2. If so, has anyone successfully managed to find a permanent fix?

3. Does anyone know a reputable place that builds these that’s not in China?

The cover is freakin’ beautiful I just can’t bring myself to put the stock cover back on. Pic is attached. I appreciate the advice this community has to offer.

Yes, its common to leak. Probably best to put the stock cover on before you crash due to oil leaking onto the back tire.
Listen to your mechanic.
Looks pretty. But is kinda dangerous. To you and to the bike...
It will always leak ( zero quality ), if the bike is dropped or falls over it will break. OEM is best.

Also wrong forum.
The clear stator cover's are cheap and you wont find a clear one that does not leak.
Add neon lights or something else if you wanna be cool.
Seriously, Go back to OEM.
Why? Just why? (I'm talking about the cover, not the leaking.) Just go OEM/Stock, safer, looks better and doesn't make you look like you're trying to impress anyone.
We need that facepalm smiley back badly.

OP, to answer your questions.
  1. Yes they leak from the factory, always.
  2. Yes, take the sight plate off and seal it with some RTV black gasket. Make sure it is properly applied and tacky before putting it back on the cover.
  3. No, they're not recommended or reputable.
I'm not advocating they're a great (or even good) product. I'm just answering your question. I know a couple people who use them, and they all needed to properly seal the sight glass.

After sealing they'll work, but they still won't be as safe or durable in an accident. But you probably already knew that ;)

Dow Corning 735 is commonly available if you want to try sealing it. They say that their 3-0100 has better adhesion and oil resistance at the price of a temperature limit of 350°F instead of 400°F . But it's hard to find.

get some gasket material from the parts store and carefully cut precision gaskets for both surfaces, THEN

bring that cover to a machine shop and have them shave the mating surface so its perfectly flat.. then check that cover where that glass sight comes off and check it for warpage as well..

a CNC machine shop will be able to true that mating surface up so its flat and true then the gasket can do its job and seal it up tight.. they plane it like you would deck a cylinder head to get that surface flat again..

have you tried putting that surface down on a known FLAT surface and use a feeler gauge to see if its warped or out of spec?

if you get that cover decked out and make a good gasket there is no reason along with just a thin film of liquid gasket this joint should be water tight under pressure..

specially if it didn't leak before you swapped it out.. new case most likely wasn't machined precise before they packed it up and shipped it off? that's how they are able to sell em so cheap, cut corners.. something you must do to these things to get em to fit.. others have done it in the past and use em daily..

I like the ability to see your oil and level at a quick glance, and see if its moving around when its running something that little secret squirrel sight glass doesn't allow for, motion.. you can really tell when its filthy, low or not moving with a large glass window like this..

the sight glass on sport bikes are so tiny, like a mouse is checking the level not a human... lol

I guess you could tell if it's filthy if you lean the bike over enough for oil to run up against the window. But I'd think that it would have to be leaned fairly far. Don't see how to check the level there, i.e. the bike needs to be level and I wouldn't expect the oil level to be visible then. Or is that window bigger than I realize? You could also tell if it's moving but it's right next to the generator rotor. Something would be seriously wrong if it wasn't.

I've always considered them to be in the same category as neon lights and sound systems.

Where is it leaking from?
Around the gasket area or does it have a crack in it?

Chinese covers are prone to leaking around the gasket, previous owner fitted one to my GSX-R6 and it sucked fixing it.
