So even though the riding season here is short - I figured ahh why not?? After evaluating and seeing most street riders including military folks - I would say 85% are squids - By no means am I saying people need to be in leathers and racing boots like myself or a few others who ride with me...but seriously atleast have gear that will protect you!

So it is my goal while stationed here to save these young souls down the road from me and teach them the right way.....

Good luck with that.

I went for a street ride 2 weekends ago through the old route I'd take around Sussex and Hawk's Nest back in the day for the first time in a couple of years. I saw 1 guy wearing a leather jacket. Every other rider I passed was wearing some combination of t-shirt, tank top, shorts, sneakers etc etc. I wasn't wearing a full suit myself but yeah it was pretty obvious that most people don't give a crap about that stuff.

yeah i hear ya on that - one of my buddies who rides a 675 was being made fun of a guy who was like "you look like a power ranger" and his response was its better than having skin graphs. Funny thing was the guy saying it laid his R6 down in a t-shirt while back and had his whole back skinned up with patches of skin graph.

Most of the people I know who have crashed on the street that were in a t-shirt or whatever.......continued to ride in the same afterwards. Some people can't be helped.

I guess at least that guys wearing long sleeves rather than no sleeves, right?

its still going to have the close effects as this guy above - even wearing textile or mesh jackets give way in forgiving conditions - my opinion has always been if you can invest in a machine that cost thousands of dollars - why not invest more into gear? I spent $13,000 on my new GSX-R and about $2000 on gear alone ....

I crashed at 75-80mph in a 1 piece suit without a scratch - and slid on pavement for a good minute.

so do you sell it because the integrity of the leathers/kevlar is no good? For example, if I went down with my leather jacket would it be not wise to ride with it again after that with the possibility of it coming apart easily?

Twatermelon LMAO, I got a good laugh from that -- your side hobby while you're out on the streets huh? hahah, its true though. I guess people are naive to what they don't know/can't see. I've never seen a motorcycle accident in person but i'll be damned if I don
't have all of my body covered if it ever god for bid happens to me

well i took a soldier of mine out on the twisties today and gave him some good pointers - worked on BP, foot position, throttle control ---- ect - at the end of the ride he was able to say "man I have never been able to go that fast around corners" -- I said there is a time and place on public roads to go fast but not push it WOT and he appreciated what I was able to teach him. Although his butt never left the seat he got more comfortable letting the bike do the work instead of him doing all the work.

Noob here.
Had to figure out what squids means after reading the replies I get it lol I see alot of them here!
From Urban Dictionary:

1. SQUID
A young motorcyclist who overestimates his abilities, boasts of his riding skills when in reality he has none. Squid bikes are usually decorated with chrome and various anodized bits. Rear tyres are too wide for their own good, swingarm extended. Really slow in the corners, and sudden bursts of acceleration when a straight appears. Squids wear no protection, deeming themselves invincible. This fact compounds intself with the fact that they engage in 'extreem riding'--performing wheelies and stoppies in public areas. Squids wreck alot. Derived from 'squirly kid'

"We were suddenly passed by a chromed out R1 and then when we rounded the bend, we saw the squid wrapped around a tree, he'd probably be alive if he was wearing a helmet. "

2. SQUID
An extremely rare animal with a short lifespan. Usually a new sport bike enthusiast with the reasoning of a lunatic, whom you might see thrashing on an R1 wearing sandals, shorts, and a tee.
When found lying motionless on the pavement, this creature transforms itself into a stream of blood, exposed flesh, and broken limbs. Hence the squid moniker.

Stupid
Quick
Underdressed
Imminently
Dead

"Did you see that guy leave the showroom on the R6? Did you see what he was wearing? What a moron. That Squid. "

4. SQUID
'Squid' is a contraction of "Squirrelly Kid", and comes from So Cal racers who were also involved in the Surfer culture.

Though the term is now widely used to describe street riders of questionable cornering skill, questionable judgement in demonstrations of horsepower and braking, questionable judgement in the protective clothing worn, and very questionable judgement in his/her friends, the meaning was actually developed at the racetrack.

Back in the day before trackdays (an organized event to allow anyone with a motorcycle and the price of admission to gain familiarity with a racetrack and learn to ride faster, more safely than on the street) were common and new racers frequently had no track experience - hence their unpredictable behavior and unsteady lines led to them being labelled "squirrelly", as unpredictable surfers (or surfing conditions or surfing equipment) were also called.

From there, the term made it to the canyons of Southern California (a popular means to risk one's hide while demonstrating riding skill at speeds well over the posted limit), then out to the rest of the world that reads about So Cal in magazines and apparently strives to be just like So Cal.

"I really hate dealing with the street squids riding over their heads in the 'A' group at Buttonwillow."

"That trackday org is all about getting money from the squids who don't know better."

"Yeah, there was another squid taken off Palomar in an ambulance this morning."
