I have recently purchased a 1997 GSXR 750, and I think I hear the timing chain noise that was described here. My question is, how can I tell if the CCT has been replaced with the manual one or not, and if it has been, how do I adjust it. If it hasn't, I plan to follow your advice and replace it.

Lift your tank.
Look on the riders right side of the engine in the center there.
The OEM Auto CCT is a small silver cylinder with a bolt head in the center.
If it is aftermarket most likely it is a blue alluminum housing with a bare bolt sticking out of it

Uh-oh, looks like the factory piece to me. I guess I had better get that replaced soon. 21000 miles on this bike, but it doesn't run like it has any engine damage.

Just ordered the APE CCT, and I have to say, the fellow I talked to gave me great service. Thanks, guys, for your help.
