Aaah yes, Scott Gray. I was in the Air Force at this time and one of my friends and I would often ride down to Willow to watch F-USA and WERA endurance.
Graves wasn't mentioned as being in the top two in this article, so I may not have been present at the race in this article...but I do remember watching Gray and Graves, both on Suzuki big bores, battling it out and swapping leads nearly every lap. It was a fun contrast watching Graves, who was built like "a racer", and Gray who was just a big dude essentially going the same speed. And they'd often pass each other at different points on the track; not like one had a distinct advantage over the other in given conditions.
Still one of the best races I've ever seen.
