Big Blocks - block internal oil passages and rerout oil through external lines ?

3666 Views 15 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Mr APE
Hi, i´m planning on putting a big block in my engine (want to go to 1317ccm), and read and heard about sweeping big blocks.
I thought of closing the oil jets below the block, and take off the oil from the crank gallery, and route it through external braided lines up to the head.
Has anyone done this before ?
What size of oil line should i use ?
Are the standard banjos you take for brake lines sufficient for oil flow and pressure ?
Will i need restrictors to keep the crank lubed ?

Yup, but they are a pain to make....your choice, the kits sell for like $230 US......something like that....

I'll dig up some more info tomorrow....

A lot of people use these even if they don't block the passages and go with a smaller bore, but i think that's how they got started........

any info will be highly appreciated :punk
If i can get away with standard braided brake lines, that would be really nice, because i could do them myself, and i don´t care about looks, it should just work properly !
I was just wondering, if they would flow enough oil.
I really don´t want a leaking big block, as it should go straight in a street bike (no city traffic though).

Thailand, I can't get enough of that place;).

They are made by Vortex and available at

The one on the bike is useless, there is no benefit to it.

no, this is not exactly what i mean, but could be adapted with longer oil lines to reach the crank gallery.
This kit will only help lubricate the cams with cooling oil (low pressure) through the cylinder head cover.
The "actual/real" lubricating oil will come up next to the cylinder studs (that´s why you have O-rings in there).

Have a look at the pics:

don't the oil jets under the block spray up under pistons to keep them cool i was looking at my manual today oil going everywhere
:eek:eek whats the idea of running more pressure oil to top end?
:scratch:confused

no, there´s two differnt jets.
The ones will spray oil on the underside of the pistons to cool them.
The other ones will let a measured amount of oil go up to the cylinder head through the holes in the block where the studs are.

What i want to do is keep the oil out of the cylinder block, to avoid the base and head gaskets getting leaking.

thanks fjd ,i know a bit about the old gs's, i'm still learning on these :cheers ken
It is not really necessary to do that with a big block, unless you have bored the cases so deep that you ran into the oil passage.

so you never heard of leaking/sweeping big block engines ?
Especially for road use i really want to avoid any pressurized oil on the gasket surfaces.

For large bore blocks they use o'rings;)

i know that, but they are used only on top to help cure blowing head gaskets, what i am looking to avoid is oil leakage.
BTW: why did you close the thread on modifications to the top end oiling improvements where [email protected] was talking about easy modifications to improve head cooling ?

Uh...because it was from 2001, the same topic as this as I understand it, the problems of [email protected] are thankfully gone, and I don't like looking at the same thing for 6 years.

Here for those who it helps....

Why not take the easy route and contact APE directly? I mean by phone or direct mail? PM'ing Jay could take a long time as he's not here often......

Yes. PMing me is not a good idea if you want a prompt reply E-mail [email protected]
