check the clutch basket, they sometimes get loose where the springs are on the back of it. then they can rock back and forth. i have heard a few other people complain of this.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Is this a serious problem, or one of those irratating noises that you can live with..??

As for the alternator, it does have have bearings that can go bad. Pull it and check for play. You can also run the engine without the alternator in place to see if the noise is still present, but block the opening well as oil sure does fly out if you don't..!!

An easy way to check it is to start the bike up and unplug the alternator while the bike is running, if the knocking goes away most likely your bearings are bad. By unpluging the alternator it takes off any load on the bearings and lets them freewheel. I went threw this same problem a few years ago. Good Luck

Fortunately the alternator is fully rebuildable. Press hard with your hand on the end of the alternator while the bikes idling. If the rattle changes pitch, its the old alternator bearing...fixable. Pushing on the metal end piece changes the pitch of the 'drum' so the noise changes. Hopefully it is just the alternator.
