ok so i have an 07 600. i was wondering if it would be bad to have no catalitic conv or the stock exhaust tip on it?
like would it be bad for my motor or will it be ok to ride without damaging something?
please let me know asap,
thanks

i would like to know when i try to go wide open throttle my bike slows down and i have to roll off then open slowly to pick up speed. i am getting FI code _c029. does that play a part in it?
:facepalm

anytime your bike throws a code - go to google and type in the year/model of your bike and the code...a gixxer.com link or more will come up - ur not the first one with this problem.

02 600, 02 750, 02 1000 all have same valve clearance specs. So if I was to swap cams into my 600, 750 intake cam on intake side, 1000 ex cam on exhaust side. Degree cams, adjust check and clearances, tappet to cam and piston to valve. I'm assuming I won't have any clearance issues even though the 750/1000 cams are a higher lift cam? Any help is appreciated, trying to learn as much as I can so I can start tuning my engine. Thanks.

Valve clearance
intake: .10-.20mm (.004-.008in)
exhaust: .20-.30mm (.008-.012in)

02 600 cam specs:
intake max lift: 8.6mm
ex max lift: 7.3mm

intake valve timing:
open btdc: 33 degrees
close abdc: 68 degrees
duration: 281 degrees

exhaust valve timing:
open bbdc: 53 degrees
close abdc: 30 degrees
duration: 263 degrees

02 750 cam specs:
intake max lift: 8.7mm
ex max lift: 7.3mm

intake valve timing:
open btdc: 31 degrees
close abdc: 71 degrees
duration: 282 degrees

exhaust valve timing:
open bbdc: 51 degrees
close abdc: 32 degrees
duration: 263 degrees

02 1000 cam specs:
intake max lift: 9mm
ex max lift: 8mm

intake valve timing:
open btdc: 37 degrees
close abdc: 72 degrees
duration: 289 degrees

exhaust valve timing:
open bbdc: 52 degrees
close abdc: 34 degrees
duration: 266 degrees

i have installed reground kent cams in my 08 750, but find that all the original valve clearances are gone to hell, am i using the wrong specs (im using 07 specs, cos i couldnt find 08 ones) or does the regrinding process throw the original clearance to hell? do you know the 08 750 specs?

Changing cams can require a whole new set of valve shims. It all depends on whether / if they changed the base circle of the cam (the base circle is the side of the cam opposite of the cam lobe, where the cam ISN'T pushing on the lifter).

Just FYI, most cam specs are based on the difference between the cam lobe and the base circle - duration is measured from when the cam starts vs stops moving the lifter, and the height is how far the lobe moves the lifter.

Anyways, if the cam maker changed the base circle, you'll need a full new set of shims across the board. (usually, you'll see a fairly constant change - maybe an extra .20mm on all of them, for example). Whatever that amt of change is, if you change each shim that amount you typically will get in the ballpark.

But then, from valve to valve, you'll still need to individually measure / change each shim for the exact right fit ( the right valve clearance/lash)

Now, how MUCH valve lash / clearance you should have is a different question. I'd recommend contacting the maker of your cam and asking them. Oftentimes, they recommend the same as stock, but personally if the cam maker recommends something different, I'd go with their number

(Cam design is way more complicated than most people will ever understand, and a good cam maker will spend a lot of time working on things like opening / closing rates.... to help the valves live a long life in particular... and using the correct valve lash is important to making it work the way it was designed to)

If the cam maker did NOT change the base circle of the cam, then you probably wont need to do a major change across all the valves, you just need to individually check / change each valve as necessary (again, I recommend using the cam makers suggested valve lash clearance)

hi all, i tried to ask this question in the 1000 subforum but got no responses. Would anyone here know whether you can use a 03 /04 1000 head in a 01/02 1000 engine?
the cams valves etc are identical (the dimensions are but the 03 cams are lighter than the 01s ) but the tensioner is missing the oil line and the bolt pattern for the tnesioner looks different. now, in theory you could use a 03 tensioner in the 03 head but then you would reduce the oil circulation. some people are running ape tensioners which also do not have an oil line so this should not be too critical... right?

super cool to see this thread running since 2006! :thumbup

Got a gsxr 1000 k7 with just a bmc filter, dual yoshi slip ons and arrow mid pipe. Want to run nitrous dry 40 shot for just some fun, not a drag setup. What engine and tranny upgrades do I need to do to run reliably?

Heard upgrading to a spray bar is a must, and so bazzaz tuning w/ multi map on the fly switch.

4-5 guys also recommended to do heavy duty valve springs, stiffer clutch, high pressure oil relief, though most nitrous shops said 40hp is a small shot that doesnt need any of the items in blue, if anything, just a tune? thoughts?

Not sure about plugs and coils either?

Dont plan on exceeding a 40 shot or do any other performance mods. Just wanna run this setup reliably, what do you suggest? Dont wanna go boom.

Chip,

Would a K7 head bolt up to a K5? Are there cam differences? I have a set of Yoshimura Stage-R, Type-R cams in my K5 and wanted to know if there would be any benefit in swapping a K7 head onto the motor and dropping my K5 Yosh cams in (if it's possible). Or would I have to get a set of Yoshimura Type-R cams for the K7 head to make it all work? Are there any gains in doing this?

Also, the motor in my K5 is a 1070. I was thinking about stroking the motor for a little more low end grunt. How big should I go for a street motor - 2mm, 3mm, 4mm? This bike is ridden every weekend all summer long so I need a reliable, problem free set-up. Thanks.

I'm new to this page and new to the gsxr world but I really need help I just started riding for the year yesterday and some today I've got a 06 gsxr 600...it ran great started right up and did fine all day today was crusing at about 75 in 6th gear and noticed I had no more acceleration... When I slowed down it died on me so I quickly roll started it and barely made it home it had a horrible missfire along with loud popping and crackling even spitting flames out of the exhaust....it won't stay running at idol...note I've got new NGK spark plugs as of last week (CR9EIX) and a new aftermarket stator and regulator from Amazon... haven't dug into it yet just trying to get some ideas where I should start and if this maybe a common issue bike has 22,000 miles

All your engine

UPDATE: I found out I wasn't getting anything out of the far left cylinder... So I pulled the plug and the brand new plug was kinda melted on the diode it had black hard stuff crusted between the prong and diode so I put another plug in it and now it will idol and sounds good up to about 4k RPM then you can tell something still isn't right it's still choppy and runs rough at rpms above 3 or 4k I'm guessing it's only a matter of time before the new plug does the same...... What could cause this? Coil ? Throttle body? Injector?

Why are you using iridium plugs instead of the standard CR9E?
