I'm not starting the engine in reverse... You're a bit of an asshole.

The kick start spins the crank in the CORRECT direction. When I release the clutch, it rolls in reverse.

I've set timing with the coil plate & the case. But I'm unable to set the magneto in time with the case due to the woodruff key. Any suggestions?
For those with the "if you think that's a good cylinder..." I wasn't saying it was good to go run against 500's.

I was trying to at least get it to combust a few times to know that everything else is sound. I know what I'm doing.
I got a used cylinder & piston. It's running, but in reverse. :nono

I've set timing with the marks on the case and the magneto, but no luck.
i cannot fathom how you have fucked this up so badly that it now kickstarts backwards lol

i actually want to get to the bottom of this and see what the hell you've done :lol

It doesn't kickstart backwards. The magneto is supposed to turn counterclockwise during normal riding. The kickstart turns the magneto counterclockwise. It's a known issue for two strokes; highly debated but no one spills the beans on what fixes it. There's nothing that's even possible to put in backwards, it's ran forwards only two of the ten starts.

I'm going to try a new coil.

If the timing is super advanced I could see how it could kick back and start to run backwards, but I've only heard of it happening with large bore old (70's) engines.

if the stator mount is slotted, retard the timing (rotate the stator counter clockwise) half way to the limit and see what happens.

If it really is firing early enough to cause it to stop the crank on the upstroke and you've got the stator timed correctly, my first guess would be the CDI box.

Fwiw, I started racing two strokes 30 years ago, have built more than 50 two stroke engines, and I was a service manager in the powersports industry for a decade.

Sorry for busting your balls earlier, but your initial posts suggested you don't know as much as you think you do.

Good luck fixing it.

Is the woodruff key that locates the rotor on the crank installed? Sometimes they sheer off and the rotor can turn relative to the crank.

Well, one way or the other the timing must be super advanced for it to kick back like that.

Stator, CDI, coil. I'd start with the cheapest and work my way up the expense chain.

from the pic it looks like piston pic up rather than liner pic up If so i would hone it to see if it cleans up then re ring it, but if its liner pic up then get it recromed iv had loads done in the past costs about £100 the a piston kit isn't the end of the world.

on the start up you mentioned spark and leak down but didn't mention if you had fuel and if the bike has been stood a while you may have a sticky float, i bet a pound to a pinch of shit it would run if you cleaned it up and had fuel, it may rattle a tad but it would prove the rest of the motor.

and yes iv done loads of these not saying it would be right just saying it would run or at least make a few pops if bumped.

Replaced the stator; starts first kick.
Nice! I wonder if there was a short in the windings that was somehow sending a pulse to the coil way early? Glad it's fixed. Now go flip it over backwards!!!! :burnout
