96 GSX-R1100W with possible 41 Flat Slide Keihin Carb issues

I purchased a 1996 GSX-R1100W with 7k original miles on her about two month ago out of Baltimore (I'm from NC). She has an aftermarket exhaust and 41mm Keihin flat slide carbs with direct air intake (without a filter).

She died on me the first time that I took her out for a ride right after I got her home, so I gave her to a local shop and told them to do whatever she needs to get her right. They did a full service, and it turned out that a bushing on the alternator was bad, which was the reason why she died on me. They also replaced all plugs, which all showed a black carbon buildup on the electrodes. I am running 93 octane, ethanol free fuel with a Techtron fuel cleaner added.

So I rode her this afternoon, she did fine as long as the rpm's were around 3k plus, and if we were not stuck in stop and go traffic. I rode into the city, and had to stop an many occasions due to red-lights and heavy traffic. She started to give off a couple of "Puffs" sounds, almost like she got vapor locked, which lasted while we were stopped at a light, and then the puffs stopped after we got going again. It did take some higher rpm's to get her cleared up however. It seems to me that she is getting way to much fuel, and therefore sputters and putters at low idle speeds, but absolutely takes off like a rocket as soon as the rode is open like on the highway. There is absolutely no hesitation when you get on the throttle and speed up. There are also no issues when running at 70mph or faster. She runs as smooth as smooth can be.

So, my question is probably the obvious! Are 41mm flat slide carbs to aggressive for lower city speed riding? If not, should I get the carbs cleaned and re-jettet, or would I be better off selling the 41mm and get me some more down to earth carbs? I don't know anything about this bikes history or the carb specifications, so I am a little stuck here. I do know that she was sitting in storage for almost 13 month before I bought her.

Also, does anybody know of a shop who could clean and re-jet the carbs according to my bikes engine and exhaust, or can someone recommend a different carb that would be more suited for daily riding and not so much the race track, if selling and buying a different carb is on order?

But I do like the way the 41mm Keihin Flat Slides sound and performs, so I hope that keeping them and having them re-jetted and cleaned will be the answer.

One other issue: The wires that keep the front light bulbs in place are broken. Can new wires still be purchased to keep the light-bulb placement secure and correct? My light stream / beam is all over the place since the bulls are not being held in place.

Thanks,

Andy

I was a little surprised that I didn't get any feedback here, but I did find out from a different forum that the 41mm FCR Flat Slide 's are way, way, way to big for a stock GSX-R 1100. So, since I don't know of any racing motorcycle shops around my area here in Raleigh, NC that I could take my bike too in order to get a professionals opinion, I'm going to contact Sudco, who sold the carbs to the previous owner, and see what setup they recommend. Maybe they can come up with a setup that can work, or at least recommend a carb size and setup that is going to work for my bike. I bought this bike because I always liked the way they looked, but I really fell in love with the sound of this machine! I hope that if I need to go to a smaller flat-slide carb, somewhere between 36-39mm will still give me the sound that she has now. I also still can't believe that the last owner spend $7k for the bike and modifications that he did, and then only rode her for 400 miles / four weeks after he purchased her from a dealer in July 2015, and then placed her into storage in August of 2015, and then sold her to me for $2.2 in August 2016! I do hope that selling the 41mm carbs, if need to, will cover most of the cost for the replacement units.

Either way, I will post a reply when this carb project is completed on what the final setup and configuration of whatever carb I'm going to install just in case that another member is thinking about going to a mac-daddy carb.

I picked up the GSX-R this afternoon, and the shop kept adjusting the carbs with the new air filters installed until they got everything tuned perfectly within all three: lower, mid, and upper RPM ranges.

Here is the final carbs configuration:

Was # 165 Main, now a # 158
Was # 55 Pilot, now a # 52
Was 0CEMP needle, now 4 notches from the bottom
Set fuel screws at 1-2 turns out
Air screws now at 1 1/2

It is way to cold in NC now to go riding, so I will give an update on how she is doing now after it warms up a little.
