I just bought a 87 gsxr 750 that has not been run in about 2 years. Is there a good way for me to prelube the engine internals so it doesnt start too dry or should i worry about it. I am going to do an oil change before i turn it over , do i check the oil cold or hot. any other suggestions for this newb, oh yeah, spark plug gap? what do i set it at? i know i need a manual

Whats up man?, welcome to the O/C board! :punk I think theres an ignition fuse that you can pull under the seat so that the bike will turn over but not fire so you can prelube the engine. I personally wouldnt worry about it, but its not a bad idea. Best way to check your oil is to have someone sit on the bike in normal riding position and then you check it through the site glass. Spark plug gap is .024-.028. NGK plug number for your bike is D9EA. Ive got a manual if you need any other specs or help.

Yeah, I seriously doubt it will fire right up, so it will be oiled well before starting. If the fuel didn't have stabilizer added before storage you'll probably have a lot more work than that. See if she'll fire.....if it ends up running like crap we'll talk ya through some carb stuff:biggrin

I like to have them good and lubed before i even crank them, the last old engine I started I drained the oil went and got some cheap stukk and thin like 5=30w and filled the case all the way to the top and let sit for a few days (dont turn the engine) to soak in to the bearings then drained it to normal, pulled the plugs and shot some engine storage oil in the clylinders, then pulled the valve covers and put cam lube on the lobes and oiled the valve stems and rocker shafts, sealed her back up then cranked, with the plugs out a shot bit then put the plugs in and fired her, I have done this with bikes that have set for 25-30 years and they are quite when they fire up with out any rattling, just a little smoke for a bit, its worth the effort plus you can check every thing out.

I was gonna say a few squirts of oil in the cylinders, and then crank it over for a few with no fire to the plugs then crank her.

BTW welcome to the site:cheers

tried to start it today with no luck. Sounded like it wanted to start, maybe. but no bad mechanical noises. I am thinking timing? the previous owner did a timing chain change i think, is there an easy way for me to check the timing? what about checking for spark, can i pul the plug wire and put another plug in it then crank the engine or is there a better way?

Id check for spark first, take out one of the very outer spark plugs, hook it back into the spark plug wire, ground it on one of the valve cover bolts and then crank it over. If it sounds like it wants to start it probably has spark, but best to check it anyway.
