2012 Japanese Superbike Shootout - Video

It has been a couple years since we last did a Japanese literbike shootout, because, frankly, the field has been quite stagnant for a while (save for Kawasaki's total revamp of the ZX-10R last year). It took them another year, but Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha have all tweaked their respective contenders for 2012 - the CBR1000RR, GSX-R1000 and YZF-R1, have significant changes, while Kawasaki returns for 2012 with the same traction-control-equipped machine it introduced last year, confident of its chances.

Having ridden all of the players at their respective intros, we knew it was time to once again pit them against one another for Japanese literbike supremacy. Read the respective stories for details on the upgrades, because here we're evaluating how they compare to one another. With the CBR's improved suspension, the GSX-R's re-worked engine and upgraded brakes, and the addition of traction control to the YZF-R1, the ZX-10R has some stiff competition this year.

If hype is all that's needed to win shootout comparisons, Ducati's new 1199 Panigale would have this in the bag. We're out to prove that this year's literbike field is closer than most would think. Welcome to Motorcycle.com's 2012 literbike shootout, Part One.

Instead of a mega test with every contender, we decided to split the shootouts, first with the four Japanese literbikes, followed by a separate test with the Euro brands. The winners will face off in a head-to-head battle in part three.

hmm i checked out a shootout recently which in the tests the honda and gixxer was 1st and second on the road and quarter mile tests, the zx10r only won on the track. so if your not racing then id go for either the gixxer or cbr. id only bother about the zx10r if i was racing it.
Good point. Which makes me realize that there are actually nine companies making a competitive "liter" bike now. Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, kawa, BMW, Ducati, mv, aprilia, and ktm. Now I see why they're testing em like a tournament...
They mentioned in the reviews how a couple of the bikes have traction control now. Has anyone ridden a bike with traction control? Does it make a big difference when taking curves fast?
Ya the Gixxer isn't that bad COMEBACK...:lol

Back in 1994 i had a GSXR750 and my bud had a GSXR1100...He would be so pissed every time we raced...:p

When you have the skill to use all of the power you will win the race...:yumyum
this....in fact just the other night i was at a local "bike night" if you call it that. i prefer the term "stand around and watch the harley guys get drunk and try to start their bikes, night" :thumbup anyways a group of about 5 nearly new sportbikes rolled in. couple 600s a 1000 or two and i just began to drool. my buddy comes over to me and puts his hand on my shoulder and goes "hey dont even sweat the fact their bikes are nicer than yours." with a mild amount of dismay i asked whys that? and his reply made me see that, he said "dont let your head swell up too much but look at them, 19-21 years old and brand new bikes that mom and dad paid for all wearing t shirts and flip flops.....you could ride circles around them with your old heap of aluminum 600 all day long."

it truly isnt about the bike, its about the rider all the way.

Yep, the rider is 90% of the equation. Always more fun to be fast on a "slow" bike than slow on a fast bike :biggrin
it all comes down on who has the biggest set of balls, who opens the throttle first and then keeps it open the longest.
Just saying!!!
