My bike came with a punched ignition and setup for a switch, the previous owner thought he had lost the key so he took the ignition off and put it in the trunk and wired a toggle to it. works flawlessly really. I cant stand not having an ignition, so i bought one from ebay, wires all look the same and plug in, but the bike wont start, fuel pump does not prime and red light blinks.

I am guessing that this switch does not have the proper resistor, so my question is what wire do i add the resistor to? all i can find online is how to remove igntion and goto a toggle when this time i want to just put a new ignition on.

Not that you are, but this post looks just like the kind bike thieves make. That's why you don't see many replies.

Well I am not a thief, I bought this bike about 2 months ago and he had it all f'd up. Ignition was drilled and on a switch(thought he had lost the key), the bike was missing all kinds of hardware, fork seals shot, rear was lowered with extensions..... It is a project for me, trying to get everything small done before i strip it for winter and get all new fairings and chain/sprocket so i can take those extensions off.

anyhow, I figured it out, it was exactly what I thought I had to do.

I have a1997 gsxr and got one of those Ebay ignition kits and the bike won't start check the coils and they tested good but no spark I just learned about the 100ohm thing for the ignition, I tested the one I have and nothing, is it possible to add this resistor and not have to get another ignition? Has anyone else had to do this, or should I get an ignition switch from a wrecked bike.

Well, you just responded to a post from 2017...
You are not likely to get many replies on this one.
The first question is why did you need to replace the ignition?
Most often this is because the bike is/was stolen and had the ignition punched out.
if you lost the key, best thing is to have a locksmith cut you another one.
If you are dead-set on replacing the ignition, go with an OEM one that would have the right internals.
basically you are asking us to help you hotwire a possibly stolen bike!

I know this thread is old, but I also was looking for an answer and couldn’t find it. The problem with soldering the resister in (which is definitely what needs to be done (100ohm) is the instruction aren’t clear as to which wires you need to do it to. So, In my case what I did take my old ignition out (it just had key problems, the guts in the bottom were good. I laid the new ingnition and the ok’d one df I have a1997 gsxr and got one of those Ebay ignition kits and the bike won't start check the coils and they tested good but no spark I just learned about the 100ohm thing for the ignition, I tested the one I have and nothing, is it possible to add this resistor and not have to get another ignition? I had the same problem, and yes, if you got a chise

Goofed up my last entry sorry. If your trying to get an eBay ignition to work, And you still have your OEM one on the bike, take them both and lay them on the table. You’ll need a torx bit with the dimple in the middle and a philips screwdriver. Flip them over so you looking at the bottom, start with the old one and remove the torx screws on the bottom side. Keep pressure as the screws come out, slowly pull it apart, grab the plastic part that has the wires attached and the wires obviously and the rotator, you’ll be grabbing everything inside that thing!! Set it aside and keep track which way it goes back in. The old one is already set up the way you need it, it has the correct resistor, the bike already recognizes it, the only thing that will be different is you’ll have a new key and lock! Now the other ignition. Just empty the bottom of that one and keep it aside . You’ll use the old hard ware to install said things into the new ignition, INCLUDING THE OLD BACKPLATE!! It’s an ungly color but it works best. Make sure it’s going in the way it came out originally and make sure to use the torx screws in the bottom of that because the philips won’t grab! Just did this to my bike and it was like it never knew what what happened! Works great!! If anyone reads this and tries it let me know!
