You could remove the o-ring with an o-ring pick...or a small screw driver...you have to be super careful that you don`t knick it...then when you put it on, you have to make sure that it hasn`t twisted.
I use Dow Corning o-ring lube.
In your case, I would just smear some engine oil on it...the whole point of this exercise is not to insert the o-ring dry...lube it up, install it, done.
