hey guys, been lurking on here for a while in hopes of getting a 02 gsxr600, but alas i would cry when i dropped a new bike (more so than a used one). i am 22, got my permit and am now looking to get a first bike. i have about $3,000-$4,000 i am looking to spend for a decent bike that won't break down on me. i am also 6'1" and weigh about 200lbs. cali bike prices are pretty high so i am limited in choices here...

2002 kwak ninja 250
4000 miles
$2500

1995 honda cbr600
21000 miles
$3700

i am all for the honda, but am concerned about reliability. some people have said to me that a bike with 20,000+ miles is like a car with 100,000+... is this true? considering the honda is all stock how much money do you guys think i'll have to throw into it to make it reliable? i know the ninja is small for me, but i won't have to worry about it breaking down on me... right??

both bikes are on the for sale section of this page... web page

thanx guys!

p.s.- i have all my gear already, so no squiding here.

Well, I personally would never buy a bike with that many miles..take a look at some used SV650's, particularily the 99

SUZUKI
1999

Road/Street
Model: SV650X
Piston Displacement (CCs): 645
Stroke: 4
Cylinders: 2
Speeds: 6
Dry Weight: 364
Low Retail: $2,525
Average Retail: $3,320
High Retail: $3,620

Its an excellent biek to learn on, good luck

just to give you an idea of all the high mileage bikes here there is a 2000 sv650 on the site i listed above selling for $2995 with 36,000 miles
prices here on low quality or high mileage bikes are insane.

how many miles should i be looking for on a bike?

My 750 has 57,000 on it

As for the budget - is that $4K including or excluding gear ?

My teenager had an EX250 for a while - I really loved it - it was a hoot, watching him fly past people on Ortega highway was great fun, ever seen an EX250 go around the outside of an ZX6R who's rider has his knee-down ?

anyway - if you have $4k, get the EX - it will cost you nothing in a year, and you have money for gear and insurance, plus in a year you will be a way better rider.....

FWIW, I had a '91 CBR600F2 that had over 60,000 street miles and two seasons of racing with the speedo disconnected and it ran like a champ. Take care of any motor and it will last. Having owned an EX250 Ninja for my first bike, I can tell you from experience that you will be bored with it after about 6 months. I'd go for the Honda and resell it later if you want another bike. It will make you happier longer, it stands up to crashes very well, and holds its resale value better.

My roommate has a 95 F3 with over 80,000 miles on it. (I think he's close to pushing 90,000) That bike is holding up like a champ, and if that pic is the actual bike you're gonna be getting, it looks like it's in great shape.

I learned to ride on my roommate's bike before buying a 97 gixxer 600, then moving on to my R6. It's an awesome bike, PLENTY fast enough for a beginner, and for the most part the engine is bulletproof. (Or at least my roommate's is)

I had a 94' that didn't run for almost 2 years and just a little carb cleaning and changing the fuel, etc.... it ran like new.
