Just turned over 1000 miles on my 750 gixxer. As far as the first service goes, should I take it to the dealer, they want almost $300. I just changed the oil, cleaned and lubed the chain, checked most of the bolts, checked the air cleaner and throttle/clutch linkage to make sure they didn't have too much play in the cables. Other than that, what else is important to check. I know the most important is to change the oil/clean, lube the chain which I have already done

Don't take it to the dealer, sounds like you did pretty much everything already. Check out your manual for the other serviceable areas.

ps.. you my want to do the oil & filter again at the the 2k mark..
to flush out any running in.. particles suspended in the motor..
it your choice ... not the rule...

Save the receipt for oil and filter. Just in case.

i too do all my own service and i actually changed my oil at 50miles, then 1000 then 3000. do it yourself, save the reciepts and you'll be fine!

uh u're fine...
the whole order of hwo to break in a motor and/or when to change the oil is about as random as there are users here on this board.

basically - your doing fine, just don't keep it pinned in 1st gear at redline for everywhere you go
