Guys, my bike starts but kills once in gear. I checked the side stand switch to make sure it was good and it is. I can't figure this out. Can anyone please shed light on this for me?

The side stand switch works fine. I swapped the frame recently. Before swapping frames it worked fine. This is a issue that came about after I got the motor into the new frame.

Saying "The side stand switch works fine", does not answer the question of how you know that. It is just a restatement of "I checked the side stand switch to make sure it was good and it is", which prompted the question. If you've checked the switch with a DMM and made sure that it grounds the turn singal/sidestand relay, please let us know how you went about it. A problem either at the sidestand switch, the sidestand relay, or associated wiring is the most likely cause (and the only one I can think of), so if this is eliminated prematurely because, say, you've just inspected the switch and made sure it seems to function well from a mechanical standpoint, you're only going to start going down blind alleys looking for other causes. This benefits noone (including the bike which you'll be poking around in for no reason).

If you can't crank the bike with the sidestand up and the gearbox in first gear, then you have a problem with the ignition interlock (i.e. switch and/or associated wiring).

But this would lead to the "check"-message on the display, after the bike went off.
Just got that on the racetrack a week ago. It has been my sidestand, which was loose, not the switch.

You are correct, but what Bill was getting at was prompting the OP to give numbers. A good portion of inquiries on this site are electrical, being that the standard bike now has FI, and many posters just assume that electrical is good, or simply lie about it because they don't know how to test it. The "CHEC" on the dash could mean more than just the sidestand switch and he wants to eliminate the possibility of the sidestand switch by electrically testing the component.

You're right about that of course, but "There's no "check" on the display either" isn't very specific. It might mean a number of things, including "no I don't see CHEC" (because I'm not looking at the right place), or "no I don't see CHEC while cranking" (but didn't notice it coming on after the engine stalled). So unless it's made clear that CHEC is there before hitting the kill switch and does not return after stalling (it usually takes a sec or so), I'm still going with the most likely explanation, particularly since I really can't think of anything else that would produce the observed effects, without being due to the interlock, except for some very weird gear-specific problem in the ECU (which is very unlikely) or the transmission having seized up and the clutch not disengaging at the same time (which I find unlikely to go by unnoticed).

Hi guys, thanks for all the responses and insight. Honestly, I haven't checked the sidestand with a DMM even though I do have one. I "figured"it was working due to the fact that before I swapped frames it was working AND the bike wouldn't start when it was in 1st gear with the sidestand up. Once I get home from work I'll make a video and post it. I'll also check the sidestand and relay with a DMM as well. I'll keep yall posted

Thanks again

Ok guys I wasn't able to test with the dmm just yet but when I went outside I noticed...

1. The bike rolls in neutral
2. The bike does not roll while in 1st gear with clutch in
3. The bike has a "check" on the dash only when the bike is in
neutral and not turned on
4. I will be checking the sidestand and relay with the DMM in a
couple of minutes

Guys, I went outside with the DMM handy to test the sidestand switch and seen this...(palmsmack)

Looks like I did something that ripped the line. I'll splice it for now just to test and order a new one... thanks! I'll see you guys on the next post because I'm sure I'll have more issues since I'm building the bike from scratch.

Thanks again

Assuming "clutch in" means "clutch lever pulled", this sounds like a problem too. Note though, that "CHEC" appears on the dash once you put it in gear and it stalls, indicating that the kickstand switch is indeed you immediate problem.

@dpapavas it was definitely the issue. Add stated in my last post I somehow ripped the sidestand wires. I spliced them and connected everything back and the bike stays on when in gear now. Thanks though man.
