Hey guys,

I know this thread is dead for a while now but I bought a k5 1000 on saturday and I noticed I have this issue too.. (first gear engaged from a stop, bike bogs a little en shakes then goes) after that it's smooth as silk.

does anyone have the pdf file for me with the mod and part numbers? I want to fix this asap so I can enjoy my new gixxer the way it should be.. i'm an ex honda rider btw haha

Yeah I can't open the pdf. Google Chrome refuses. Warning about security..

Also, what is the mod actually for? I went through the DIY and I see that 1mm bigger holes are drilled but why? Sorry if I missed the explanation but I didn't see it in mod as to WHY the mod is necesssary? Or what is the benefit of the 1mm bigger holes?

You could read the thread. It's explained pretty clearly but since I am new here I'll explain just to add my .02€ haha!

The 'stock' clutch washer on the k5/k6 GSXR1000 isn't performing the way it should be (on a lot of these bikes, not all!)
What I'm experiencing is when I'm standing still, bike in 1st gear and when I release my clutch the bike bogs as if it is about to stall. After that I feel it shaking in my steer a little and then the bike takes off. All other gears smooth as silk. The washer described in this thread needs to be replaced with a washer from a GSXR750 which 'fixes' the problem.
The extra holes are for letting the oil flow through better.

so long story short: shuddering/grinding clutch in 1st gear on launch. Pretty annoying! I own the bike for 2 days now and it already is annoying enough to do the mod. Not saying I miss my Honda but it has to ride smooth :)

Link from the OP is dead.... (thread is 8 years old so that makes sense hehe)

If anyone could post a link to the pdf it would be awesome!!!

Thanks for the reply. Appreciate it. Didn't have time to read past the DIY.

Fortunately my clutch is perfect after replacing everything with a new genuine clutch kit shortly after purchasing bike.

Good luck doing the mod with your bike!

PS Much better bike than blade imoh.

Awesome write up! Just picked up my k5 a few days ago and on the 15 minute road test i went on before i put the money down, it didnt do it (i am sure the old owner would have known about this and failed to inform me or attempt to get it sorted). Did it today, take off from the lights and the worst, abrupt shudder/disengagement of power. Pulled the clutch in and tried again and it took off fine. As the ride went on it did it several more times and everytime i would have to pull the clutch lever in and start again. I would of looked like a complete noob who got the wobbles on take off... I have got the parts on order and will be doing this mod asap!

Did the clutch mod today and found this...

Looks like someone has been in the clutch and put the washers in wrong... Anyways, new washer and back together properly and it rained outside so i will have to road test tomorrow.

Did the mod last saturday.
Only replaced the washer and didn't drill holes!

Clutch is smooth as silk now. It grabs a little earlier but no more bogging on take off! Mine was really really bad!
Plates still looked nice and basket didn't show any signs of abuse.

Me = happy!

Ive done this to 5 different bikes... we just eliminated those stupid little springs & put a full sized fiber & steel in their place. Works good on a road race setup as well as drag race.

drilling the oil holes is the primary benefit. Could have even increased oil pressure by installing a new gear during. :wink2:

My K5 1000 clutch was dragging in 1st gear on take off. Not had the chance or time to do clutch mod but I adjusted the three lifter pins. Rather than 2.25 turns out I tried coming in half a turn at a time until the 1st gear dragging stopped. 1.5 turns out and the dragging's gone. Clutch aint slipping.

Just replacing the wave spring washer with the one from the GSXR 750 and installing a new OEM Suzuki clutch kit completely fixed my clutch issues. I can't thank you guys enough.

I have a K5 1000 that I purchased from the original owner a year ago. Ever since I got it the clutch has refused to slip and modulate power starting out. The only way I could get the bike to start rolling without stalling was to ease in the clutch with the revs barely off idle. Any more revs and it would lurch and stall, unlike any other bike I'd owned. It was impossible to launch quickly to the point of it being a safety concern. Once underway, the clutch worked perfectly.I brought it up as an issue at two different shops (not Suzuki dealers..ugh) and nobody thought it was a problem. They told me that's how slipper clutches were.

I finally found this thread and installed a new OEM Suzuki clutch kit and replaced the wave spring washer from the gsxr 750 (replace part #14 on Ron Ayers Clutch diagram; the disk closet to the final drive plate, 2nd closest to the inside of the bike). I didn't feel like drilling holes and I wasn't sure the clutch was even broken.

I didn't know the clutch could work this well. It is a completely different bike now. I've realized I actually need to learn how to use a clutch again...lol.
I wish the bike would have been like this the whole time because I've been missing out on proper launches for a year. I can't even believe it...Thanks all!!
