I just joined the forum today becasue I have just bought a K6 GSXR 1000 and right from the first day I bought it it made a mechanical vibration and grind noise just as you were fethering the clutch in just as you pulled off. This means the bike jerks forwards as the clutch seems to grab on its own.

The noise is OK but its a product of the plates vibrating just as they rub just like when you run your finger round the edge of a wine glass to make a resonant sound, it's often refered to as chatter. On the Gixxer it sounds more like a growel.

Like the wine glass trick as soon as the sound starts you feel a drag on your finger which is actualy the energy needed to make the sound.

Same happens on the clutch, trouble is the drag means the clutch transmits power.

It did it on me as I was just pulling off only slowly with about 2000 rpm from a junction so I was leaned over. In came the resonance the back spun up and sent the bike down the road.

I had no real throttle on, this was not a fast launch.

I have been riding 35 years and sports bikes for 10. I can make the clutch do this with 2000 rpm on and it does it hot or cold, but thats just like the wine glass it will make the same sound (or resonate) if your move your finger at the right speed and with the right pressure.

Is that what this mod fixes? Dont Suzuki have a mod for this, this is dangerous!

Amazing PDF thanks to all those who put in such effort, at least I know there is a solution but the dealer should sort this, I can do it but this is a new bike and some ones gonna have to pay for the damage.

Thanks for confirming the clutch mod will solve the problem. Suzuki should be very greatfull that you guys have taken the time and trouble to sort what is their fcuk up.

I did some more trawling of the web and there are a lot of bikes affected. I really have a problem with the bullshit approach, I feel they put my frikin life at risk with this bike. If it does it at a junction it has sufficient energy to punt you out into on comming traffic.

I do not know if mine is the only bike that does it to this degree but I would sure be interested hearing from anyone else with this problem who has had damage as a result and who would like to persue Suzuki through a class action.

And I am not talking a no win no fee bullshit I mean a proper ££ barrister, clearly there's a case to answer.

You can also email me on [email protected]

It's not that I am not capable of doing the mod , I have been building bikes for years, it's just I would not build one like this and I sure would not sell it to anyone else!

Many many thanks to Jetspeedz for putting together this amazing piece of work and the others that worked out the fix. My 2006 GSXR 1000 K6 spat me off when the clutch grabbed just pulling out a junction this was my only new bike ever and only with 38 miles on the clock!! I had a trashed sliencer, fairing, lever, mirror......And the dealers.....ha......wot a joke if it was up the them they would still be greasing the clutch mech and telling me to "go try it again" for the 50th time........Well a bit of dealing on Ebay saw the bike repaired for nothing and when I got round to it (3 years later) this fix worked right out the box......I wished i done in sooner the bike is transformed. Only 2 points I would add........(1) the washer i removed from my clutch was beveled just like the replacement but 1.5mm thick steel..........The replacement was 1mm so if you ever get them mixed up just measure the thickness (2) if you find the clutch basket wont come out as the crank is in the wrong place just open the screw on cover on the R.H side of the crank and turn the crank with a socket to clear the clutch basket. Many thanks again guys you saved my bike! And anyone out there thinking of doing this mod....do it .......it works its not difficult just take your time and folow the instructions!

The grab/squeal thing is a resonance set up by the natural frequency of the clutch assembly on take up (which is why only some bikes get it, if you lucky enough to have a mixutre of tolerances/materials that do not resonate you don' get it) its made more likly to occur by the thicker origanal spring washer transmitting great resonant forces to the complementy resonant components of the clutch and indeed the engine, the retrofit washer must dampen the resonance yet still offer sufficient rigidity to allow the plates to be compressed. The holes drilled i guess are to get rid of the excess oil.....remember the nearest equilivent i can think of to this situation is running your finger round a wine glass. Your finger has to be wet enough ( in clutch has to be sufficient oil) the glass has to resonate at the rate of your finger (the take up rpm of the clutch) and the glass is best held to another surface ( the clutch assembly through the rigid concave washer to the engine) change any one of these and you will probably nail it but the mod changes 2. The significance of the resonance is on take up there is zero clearance between the plates so even through they resonanant or flutter only a few micron each that multiplied by the number of plates is like someone else dumping the clutch for you....hence the jerky take off.
The sticking clutch without resonance is a matter of standard friction..........when i did the mod my clutch went together first time dragging with no plates in..........i still dont not why so i pulled it off again and checked every thing........this time i put it back on it sat down of the shaft easyer...........i guess there was some thing wrong with the location of the slipper clutch components.......but i never found out what........... there were no witness marks........ just went on easyer this time
