Nerd longshot: OCR on PC

I hate searching for free apps. Unless you're really lucky, you're downloading some flaky spyware for sure. Does anyone know of a free, no BS OCR app that can grab the text out of images on WIN7?

The goal: I have a book, the contents of which I'd instead like as searchable text on my PC. Think of your service manual.

I’m thinking
  • take pics of each two pages with my phone
  • dropbox auto-uploads them to the cloud / my PC
  • open pics on PC and use some OCR app to extract the text
  • ... which I’ll copy / paste into word docs / PDFs
  • then name & save appropriately in a designated directory

With the text in word docs or PDFs, when I need to find something in the future, windows search will do the rest

If you know of an suitable OCR app (or a better approach!), I'm all ears.

Sounds tedious, there isn't an ebook version available to purchase?

A) No E-book version and
B) Naaaw, I'm very methodical when I approach a task and once I get into a routine, especially a repetitive one, it becomes automatic, like playing the guitar / piano.

I'll do the first 5 or 10 slowly and I'm sure it'll be down to 5-10 seconds each once I'm in the zone. A couple of hours and a few pints later, it'll be digitized.

Gotcha....never done that before so I'm of no help here. How many words per minute can you type?
