If you're asking this question then maybe it's not the right bike for you. If you down shift in to first you could cause a disturbance in time and space and the universe will implode and I highly doubt your insurance covers that.

Definitely safe to use first. And this is why - The drive train is good for Superstock racing. All hairpins and tight corners on track will be taken in first and braking and acceleration will be as harsh as the human body can cope with.
As to whether itís harder to control, well that depends on the rider, but I happily use first on track and road.
