They're pretty different guns. The Sig is a single stack compact while the XDM is a double stack full size. I have them for completely different purposes. The Sig is used for concealed carry while the XDM is the bump in the night gun.

The Sig is more comfortable to carry IMO than a compact XDM would be because it's slimmer. The trigger on the Sig is much better than the XDM and it has second strike capability.

I like both of the guns but they serve different roles for me.

Oh ok

From what I've read, you need a special lisence to carry it concealed? but you can carry a gun holstered on your hip so everyone can see loaded, ready to use if the need arises?

Thanks for elaborating, I've been looking at several lately but the range only had a few I could rent.

I do carry concealed. I do it for protection, I have a wife and son to take care of and keep safe. Also, my job has me working with sensitive information and my name is on posters, papers, and presentations concerning bio-warfare agents.

Each state has their own gun laws so one answer doesn't apply everywhere.

Utah's law says that you need a concealed carry permit to carry a loaded gun that's hidden from sight.

State laws also permits one to carry a gun out in the open; however, the gun must be 2 actions away from firing ie not loaded. Some states don't allow open carry, loaded or unloaded, without a carry permit.

With a concealed carry permit one is also permitted to openly carry a loaded firearm.

Re: Like minded people....gotta love it.

Picked myself up an XDm .40 3.8" in solid black today and had a set of night sights put on it when I bought it. Haven't had a chance to fire it yet (I live within city limits, unfortunately) but I should be able to go fire it sometime next week at a range. I'd go tomorrow - but I have wisdom teeth removal surgery at 10:30 AM tomorrow and I am being put under general so no place in their right minds would let me come fire a gun tomorrow.

Understandable then why you carry.

It's dangerous out there. If a handful of gangbangers jumps you and your family, you need a means to defend yourself. There is no more effective way to do so than with a handgun.

As Winger said, different states have different rules. To carry concealed in most states requires a permit. Vermont, Alaska and Arizona no longer require a permit to carry concealed. There may be another state, too. (Wyoming?) Many states also allow you to carry open without a permit but again, each state has their own rules about how you're allowed to do so.

Good answer. Applies to most of us. I don't know very many people who carry, "just because they can," but there are a few.

See this is what alot of us brits believe or are told, you carry just because you can. We only have to deal with the fact our muggers might be carrying a knife which is easily dealt with, your bad guys might be carrying a gun.

On the strenght of that, I don't blame you for carrying.

A knife is easily dealt with?

Actually, the reason for carrying is to defend life or limb. That covers a lot of broad territory. What about someone's granny who could be killed or maimed quite easily by a big guy who doesn't need a knife or any kind of weapon at all? Granny with a gun, however, can stop the bastard.

You hint at a shade of misinformation that you're given about the U.S. Bear in mind, we're not just defending against other guns. There used to be a misconception floating around that you were only allowed to meet equal force with equal force. Ergo, if you were attacked by a guy with a knife, you couldn't use a gun to defend yourself. It was always a load of crap.

Using a gun is simply an equalizer. It allows one to stave off threats to life or limb. There are quite a few, however, who believe you're not supposed to defend yourself. Why they believe that is entirely beyond my comprehension.

Re: Like minded people....gotta love it.

There is a facebook posting about a guy who attempted to rob a couple with a knife. Little did he know that the boyfriend was carring a weapon. He ended up taking the guys phone, kinfe and wallet. Bought his girl friend a new pair of shoes with the money in the wallet then posted on facebook with the guys account about the failed robbery. Then gave the guys mom a call and told her she can come pick up her sons wallet and phone if she promised to kick the shit out of him.

That is why I carry

Re: Like minded people....gotta love it.

There are a LOT of stories of people who have been able to prevent the worst violence to themselves and their loved ones just because they have a gun.

Maybe they believe it infringes the human rights of the cunt that has attacked and terrified whoever they were robbing, I mean gun/knife toting robbers have feelings too right?
