CDI or tachometer 95 750

So my tach jumps straight to 16k as soon as I turn the key on and drops to 14k when cranking. I'm not sure what kind of voltage I should be seeing at the CDI but it's about 8 volts and then drops to 5 when cranking. The bike seems to run fine except for the tach. I've inspected the harness and I don't see any cuts or exposed wire. Any ideas on what to test?

Your CDI is shot and will need replacement. The tach feed is taken off the CPU in the CDI unit separate from the coil so it could run fine and just the tach output is off, though I would change it anyways since you won't know if everything is right in there.
