"These things don't belong on the street!"
This has become the cry of the rational motorcyclist when the subject of modern literbikes comes up. But what if you could have virtually all of the same performance-driven componentry and research and development that go into most superbikes in a motorcycle with roughly 30-35% less spank? Would most riders, young and old, veteran and newbie, feel like they could handle such a bike? Apparently, yes.
Supersports, or more commonly, 600s, are red-hot sellers. Editor Duke reported back from his time at the U.S. launch of the 2008 R6 that the tuning fork company claims "the 600cc segment makes up 51% of what Yamaha calls the Supersport market, a segment that is up in sales a huge 52% since 2001." Yep, these things are pretty important.
As a matter of fact, the supersport class may become even more important to OEMs than it already is –whether they like it or not. When the AMA essentially admitted to its ineptness at handling American pro racing and announced in March of this year that... [Read More]

2008 Literbike Shootout: ZX-10R vs CBR1000RR vs GSX-R1000 vs YZF-R1 |

Kids. For every hard-working junior scholar in the world, there's probably four or five little hooligans who prefer to walk on the wild side. You know, the kids who race their Big Wheels down steep hills, poke bee hives, throw rocks at dogs or joy-ride their mom's car at 15.
The OEMs are grateful for these kinds of kids, as they are the prime demographic for the quartet of outrageously fast and capable machines assembled here.
Does anyone need a bike with an insane power-to-weight ratio that exceeds million-dollar cars? No! But is there a large group of adult-aged kids with a ravenous appetite for adrenaline? Hell, yeah!
And so we have a group of bikes in which the weakest of the bunch pumps out 154 horsepower at the rear wheel, all neatly packaged inside wheelbases tighter than 55.7 inches. They are essentially production racebikes, including only a smattering of street equipment to make them road legal.

2008 Hyperbike Shootout: Hayabusa vs ZX-14 |

Take a moment, or even a few seconds, and it's easy to see that Americans like things bigger, better, and faster. We drive big muscle cars as well robust luxury sedans, and have done so for decades. Need I say anything of the ubiquity of SUVs? Or how about how fat Americans have become thanks to huge meal portions.
The motorcycle world in America, for better or worse, follows suit. Large, extravagantly designed V-Twin-powered custom cruisers have dominated bike culture in the U.S. for several years now, essentially becoming the mainstream of motorcycling. Not only are the rear tires fatter than ever, the bikes have equally big torque figures, massive quantities of chrome, thundering exhausts and rider egos to match. If that example isn't clear enough, then just consider any Boss Hoss. Or how 'bout the modern Honda Gold Wing? That ultra-tourer is, as far as I'm concerned, a motorcycle designed specifically for the robust interstate highway system of the States.
It stands to reason in my mind, then, that the truly super #or hyper# superbikes should be as plentiful as rice... [Read More]

The Motorcyclist’s Tool Kit |

The Motorcyclist’s Tool Kit
by Sportbike Solutions
There’s little that compares with the feeling and freedom of two wheels on the open road. That is, of course, until you find yourself broken down beside the open road, with no help in sight. That’s usually about when most riders open – for the first time – their OEM toolkit, only to find that it’s the next best thing to useless.
The following list includes the tools that we’ve found to be the most versatile, useful, and efficient for emergency repairs. Combined, they form a small, yet effective package that can be stowed in the trunk section of even the least accommodating race-replicas. This list is not comprehensive, and we do suggest adding tools specific to your motorcycle if money and time permit, but we do feel these 10 items are indispensable.
1) Metric Allen (Hex) Head Wrenches:
Allen-head fasteners are used extensively on sportbikes, particularly in securing bodywork, mirrors, and seats. Look for a set of Allen wrenches that includes 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 mm... [Read More]

Brake Bleeding Basics
by Sportbike Solutions
Brakes that work, and work well, are an absolute necessity on motorcycles designed to exceed most interstate speed limits in first gear alone. Still, hardly a day goes by that we don’t witness the results of brake system neglect, ranging from mushy levers and brake fade all the way up to brake failure and lockup. Sadly, most of these problems could have been easily averted for the price of a bottle or two of brake fluid and a few minutes time every few months.
As a general rule, performance motorcycles are designed to use DOT 3, 4, or 5.1 fluids … all glycol based. The performance advantages of glycol-based fluids make them the only real answer in hydraulic systems where consistent lever feel and action are mandatory. However, glycol-based fluids come with a price, as they are easily degraded by exposure to atmospheric moisture and ultraviolet radiation (light). While there are steps that can be taken to minimize these factors, the only way to reliably keep your hydraulic brake system in tip-top shape is to routinely flush, bleed, and replace your...
