Salvage Title good or bad thing

Ok here s the deal i found a bike i like new paint, all chrome, wheels, swing arm etc. I mean the bike looks flawless, and only has 15k on it, it's 1999 GSXR 750. But it does have a salvage title b/c it was dropped and dented the gas tank and messed up plastic, but since all that it has had new paint, gas tank, and farrings, i mean it looks good, What is everyone else's opinion?

if its a good price and your sure that there isn't any other hidden damage i would say go for it. i don't know about your state but make sure you will be able tag it and all that, and check your insurance.

Re: Salvage Title good or bad thing

This isnt an answer to your question but just a comment.... alot of times you'll find a clean title bike that has had MORE damage to it than a salvaged title bike, because when they crashed, they didnt report it to the insurance co. and fixed it themselves. Holds the resale value of it more, being that its clean but it doesnt mean it hasnt been abused.

I personally dont want a bike that has had many different hands on it. Meaning many owners and salvaged. Because its possible that each owner switched out parts, replaced, broke, fixed, etc. Id prefer to not have that, for mechanical reasons and safety reasons. But again, those are just my own personal feelings about this, and my own opinions. Others will feel different about this.

One other thing, I think you cant get full coverage on a salvaged bike if its just like how they work cars.

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING, CHECK YOUR STATE LAW ON SALVAGE TITLE VEHICLES...

Now that I'm done yelling. I have a salvage title bike and it runs fine. I've had her since she was 6mos old. I replaced the broken parts, painted her and took her to the inspection place... bing. bang. boom. clean title.

Again, depends on your state. GA issued me a clean title. The other option is a Rebuilt title.

I agree, check you state laws about registering the bike. Personally I look for a bike that has had the least number of owners possible, and I want a bike that's as close to stock as possible, and NO salvage title, but that's just me. Most of all check the bike out and see what your gut tells you. good luck

Alot of times they have had alot more happen to them then what the people say, remember its also going to be worth alot less when you try to sell it. In my oppinion its a bad thing, not worth the risk.

if you know what your looking at i think they are great, if you know your state laws and now what needs to be done and how, if you know bikes and can decide the damage is worth the savings in costs they are awsome. my truck is salvage title, and im sure my next bike will be this is coming from me in california. cheers

Re: Salvage Title good or bad thing

Being in cali doesnt really say much! Ive gotten a salvaged title on a car b4 n all it was was the checking of vin numbers and making sure nothings stolen, checking of all the lights, go smog, then dmv for paperwork. So if the car originally had airbags and sensors in the bumper to set off airbags, and now didnt due to the crash, or the frame was cracked or bent, its still ok as far as the laws go an u get a salvaged title. But lets say you go out n buy this car thinkin its got them in and in working order. It would suck to find out ther not really in there, when its already too late.

Check with your DMV... They will have all the info you need.

Its different for every state. In MA I had to provide every little reciept for the list of items to be fixed. In GA they just wanted a pic of the bike before being fixed and reciepts for replaced items.
