New to dragin bikes

Hey yall, i have just a few quick questions. i have decided that im gonna drag my 600 this year some what seriously, and just kinda want to see if im headed the right direction. its an 03, lowered 1 1/2 front and rear, -1 +3 on the sprockets, tre, switched to a 190/50, will be going with a shinko or shrinko or what ever it is, lol, ive got an avon on now. i also have a gix 1k swingarm and rear shock on it, stock length on the arm, stock spring and valving on the shock, and the forks are the stock 600 forks. the motor and exhaust are stock, no pc.

Now the reason i did the 1k shock is that supposedly it has a stiffer spring rate along with different valving, and im around 280lbs in gear. can anybody recommend a shock and fork setup, or at least kinda lay out what i should start at for a base line? im guessing ill need softer comp/stiffer rebound in the back, and the opposite for the front? is that right? also any tips or techniques for getting outta the hole quick? before i did my sprocket change and at stock height, i could feather it out at like 7 grand and i could keep the wheel down in first. i know i cant now, at least not at stock height, i just lowered it today, and it was to cold out to try launching it.

also, how do you guys leave the line? both feet on the ground? 1 foot on the peg? at 6'4", gettin my feet on the pegs quick is kinda difficult, and i have my pegs lowered an 1".

so please feel free to throw out any useful info for somewhat of a rookie at this stuff, i ran a few times last year, but just for shits and giggles. i'm gonna run semi serious this year, do some grudge racing and shit. thanks in advance,

Matt

oh yea, not new to drag racing by any means, been messin with it of and on for the past 7 years, and im not really trying to win events or anything this year, just want to work on consistancy and getting outta the hole, maybe go a few rounds on grudge night.

Re: New to dragin bikes

Your Correct on suspension set up .At back you want to sqaut / sit quickly and rise slowly, with the opposite happening at the front. Rear tire you might want to run a Shinko ultra soft 003 180. (lighter) Drop rear as far as possible, set sag with your weight on bike and front 1'' higher than rear (weight transfer). Both feet Planted and as for getting foot back on shift lever before hitting limiter.... with that gearing, fuhgittaboutit!!..........Get an air shifter, and be done with it.

Re: New to dragin bikes

i know it hurts my top end, i just got done running the numbers on a gearing program, i lost 24 mph on the top, from 183 to 159, but now i'm banging 5th at 122, insted of 139, and if i remember corectly, the idea is to be mid way thru 5th gear at the traps right? so i actually can go up another tooth or 2, i figure the best a stock motor 600 is going to mile an hr is around 130-135 or so, and im maxing 5th at 139 around 14k, which is about the best place to shift this bike i think. let me know if im off on my thinking. and thanks again.

Re: New to dragin bikes

I don't know if those gearing numbers are right.
I have an '02 600 with -1 front and stock rear, with the speedo not corrected it reads 183 in 6th boucning off the limiter ... took it to a dyno and the corrected speed is 156.
So unless they changed the gearbox in '03, somethings wrong.

Dyno Sheet
The first pull was done in 6th to get top-speed, then they did two 4th gear pulls.

Re: New to dragin bikes

all they are are theoretical #'s, just to help ball park where to start, and i do belive that our trannys are the same, may be a bit different, but i doubt it. and that graph really dont tell me much as far as what rpm that bike is turning, which may make up for the 3 mph differance, whats your bike actually cut at? am i pulling more rpm then you? i doubt that too, but i have a ballpark idea on gearing now, give or take a few mph.

i just saw that you said thats a corrected run? is that sae or what?

Re: New to dragin bikes

It sounds like you're on the right track and are going about things right. So the next big step is to practice, practice, and maybe practice

Re: New to dragin bikes

Make sure to get a strap to strap the front end down while at the track. That will help a lot with the wheelies. If you don't go with an air shifter, you will need to launch with one foot on the peg. That is what I have to do and I see numbers of others doing it too. You may consider getting some bolt on extensions. But the best thing is to practice.

Re: New to dragin bikes

Just like Rockin C said, you need to get you a front end strap for the front, and i would try the -1 +3 gearing on that bike and see, that gearing would help you more in the 1/8 mile vs probly the 1/4 mile due to not enough top end, also i would stretch that 600 to and slam the ass end as much as possible, and also set your shock up right to man, because setup is very important in dragracing, you do them things and that 600 will be alright i think, hope this helps you out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly, I don't know.
You'd have to ask the dyno guy that.

If you look at the dyno sheet, up in the corner it does say 'SAE Smoothing: 5' but I'm guessing that has to deal with how the graph is plotted.

I can tell you this though:
I usually run through the traps banging off the rev-limiter in 4th or just after just after shifting into 5th ... speed wise I'm around 124-126mph.
And, again, if you look at the dyno sheet, the 2nd and 3rd pulls have a max speed of 124mph, so I'm guessing it's pretty accurate.

Re: New to dragin bikes

cool, ill look into getting a strap, anybody besides pingle make em? and i know about practice, thats what i'm dedicating this year to. just kinda get the idea of how to do everything.
on that note, a quite a few friends have said that i'm wasting my time starting on a 600, that everything will be different once i move up to a liter or bigger. what do you guys think on this? i mean its a no brainer that the power hit will be different, but shouldn't the basics stay the same? just like on the street or road course i'd think that you would need to have a handle on how the bike will react in different situations, and my thinking is that starting on a 6 will give me a bit of room for error.
also, whats the deal with having both feet down and back like i see most guys do, i am going to try the launching with 1 foot on the peg at first if i feel comfortable enough, if not air shifter here i come. thanks guys and keep it coming, its hard to find guys that are into drag racing around here, seems like everybody is either out rockin wheelies or wants to be the next rossi, so i'm having a hard time finding anybody to get advice from.

Matt

oh and jdc, pay no mind to that post i made, i was half asleep when i wrote that, i just looked over the dyno shit and yea i think you maybe right on what you were saying.

Re: New to dragin bikes

+1 Schnitz Racing for the straps. Yes you are right that the basics are the same, but every bike is a little different. I would suggest stay with the 600 this year, but when you upgrade to a different bike, their will be some adjusting to it. All bikes have their own way. Just keep at it and welcome to straight lining (If you can turn, you are going too slow).

As for the feet, you see guys with them both down and back. That is because they are trying to get as much weight (body weight) over the front tire to keep it down. The way you see others is almost laying down on the bike. The problem a lot of people have doing this, is it is difficult to bring your feet back to the pegs to make the 1-2 shift before hitting the rev limiter. A couple other places to check out for drag racing bikes is www.dragbike.com or http://www.psychobike.com/cgi-bin/ik...e0078762601e85
