The ideal bike for the street? Warning: non-sportbike thread

I had the opportunity to ride a KTM 950 Supermoto and the 950 Super Duke back to back and I am in love with the 950SM. It was an absolute BLAST to ride and was much more fun than the Duke. The radial mounted Brembos were incredibly powerful and the bike was just effortless to flick from side to side. The clutch was light and easy to use as opposed to the heavy radial brembo pump on the Duke. It is the complete hooligan package.

The only thing that is confusing me with KTM and these two bikes: they put the good brakes on the SM and the fuel injected engine (about 22 hp stronger) on the Duke.

Anyhow, The 950 SM is now at the top of my short list of next bike to own and once I ride the Triumph Speed Triple, I think my mind wil be made up.

Whadayall think? Any non-sport bikes that interest you all?

Agreed, I rode a SM and it was a blast. Gotta love how the front just lifts so easy.

Now, imagine that SM with 98hp and gearing tall enough to let you cruise on the freeway and an honest-to-God 6th gear!

Denroll,

Just got an 06 DRZ 400s. Can you send me some links for all the trick bits to hop up the bike. I'm going to motard it but I bought the S because I didn't want to pay more for parts that I'm going to replace anyways.

Thanks

Baldy

I've never ridden a full size motard, but I'm pretty well hooked already. I'm definitely going to make my fiddy street legal. Then I'll have a 107cc baby motard to hoon around the streets on.

Denroll,

Just got an 06 DRZ 400s.
Sweet, welcome to the club .

For all your thumper needs, check out www.thumpertalk.com which has a very active DRZ section with quite a few experts that know their bikes. They also have an online store that price matches.

I got my 450cc big bore done through MT Technologies www.mt-llc.com or you can go through Lukes Racing. Just send in your cylinder and in like 2 weeks you'll have everything you need to put it back together.

The first mod you should do is to rip that snorkel out of your airbox and cut a hole 3" x 3" to let that thing breathe. If you're going to stick with the stock carburetor, get a DynoJet jet kit from thumperstore. This jet kit when coupled with the 3x3 mod shows an increase of power everywhere with an incredible 10whp gain up top. Throw a full exhaust on there to really uncork it.

The best mod you can do is swap out the CV carb with a 39mm FCR pumper. It ain't cheap, but it's worth every cent.

The next best mod is to swap out those mild cams with a set of Hotcams. I got the intake and exhaust cams for about $290. I think they sell them at thumperstore now.

Warning on doing the mods: it's extremely addictive! The stock DRZ S puts out about 35whp and mine put out 47whp with low compression gaskets and no fine tuning on the carb. The next mod for me is a 5mm increase in stroke which will give me 480cc and with high compression gaskets, I'm hoping for about 54whp or so.

You're going to love this bike.

What kind of fuel mileage does that DRZ get with the mods and riding it like a hooligan?

Re: The ideal bike for the street? Warning: non-sportbike th

OK, I'm going to mix metric and standard measurements, the math is up to you...

I get about 120-130Km in stop-n-go traffic before I have to switch to reserve, which would probably get me at least another 20Km, so I'll say 145-150Km as a conservative estimate. I've never ran it dry on reserve, so I might have a few more clicks in there to go. The tank is 2.5 gallons. I don't see too much of a difference in fuel economy when I baby it, so I just constantly beat the hell out of it, but then again, I've never been able to bring myself to baby it for a full tank's worth of riding to see how it does. The bike just smiles right back and takes it all.

Eff it, I'll do the math:
145-150Km x 0.62 miles per Km = 90-93 miles per tank, divided by 2.5 = 36-37.5mpg city. I've never had it on the highway or any road without stoplights long enough to go through a tank, but I'm sure the milage would jump up somewhere around 50mpg hwy. I waste a lot of time sitting at redlights burning gas in this damn urban jungle. The red lights here are horrible.

I found this over in the DRZ section of TT:

Guy with stock CV carb:
Quote:
After re-jetting and opening up the air box as well as some other maintenance items, I found the following yesterday. 15 miles of pavement @ 70 mph, 15 miles of gravel @ 40 mph, 16 miles off-road @ crawling to WFO and 10 miles around town at 25 / 35 mph = 56 miles. It took exactly 1.1 gallons to fill which equals 50.9 mpg. Before the work I averaged around 42/ 43 mpg. Much better performance now and better fuel mileage!
Most other guys seem to be getting around 50mpg with one guy claiming 57mpg on the highway with the stock carb.

That's pretty good mileage. My gixxer is supposed to be good for 40+ MPG but I never see that. And I can never baby it for a whole tank to see how much differnce it can make either.

Thanks Denroll

As you've seen before, I loved tricking out my 2 1K's so I know the addiction. I crashed at 130 mph at a track day and it's going to take months to get better but I'll get in touch with you some more as soon as I get better and start riding/wrenching.

Right on. I might be moving to San Diego around December, so I'll be somewhat "local" by the time you're up and riding.
