Here is a question for you seasoned riders, How long should I let my 600 warm up before ridding.

I'll just let it sit until the temp kicks in then I am off. Usually around 114 or so. Just treat it like a car, you want the oil to warm up and flow through the engine before you really start running hard.

You can but like I said you don't want to run hard for a few minutes. Usually by the time I get all geared up the bike is around 160 anyway lol.

Re: How long do I let my bike warm up?

Dealers are bitches, they didn't make the bike, they just sell them and pretend to fix them. Like Flshy said, I wait for a number to pop up on the digi-gauge then I'm off. If the numbers are already there when you start it. Give it 30 seconds to get oil flowing through it's veins and hit the road.

If anyone wants to get factual, the owner's manual specifically states, to turn the fast idle up to 2-3 KRPMS for 30 seconds. Then it's awaaaaaaayyyyyy you go. I think that is just for when it's cold. If it's already warm, just fire it up and snap the clutch out at 9KRPMS. That will get the oil flowing.

Re: How long do I let my bike warm up?

it's not the coolant temperature you should be worried about, it's oil temperature. it takes a few miles of riding to fully warm up the oil to operating temperature, so you should take it easy for those first few miles just to be on the safe side.

Re: How long do I let my bike warm up?

I usually just go out and start it up. Then I go back in the house and grab all my gear and get it on. By the time I get back out the bike is good to go.

I just warm up for 30 secs. (like the manual says to do) then ride of easy at first. Be carefull - do not let the bike idle too long. The acids will build up and eat away at the cylinder walls if you idle too long.

So, does that mean you go out naked? I want to ride with you. My bike doesn't move till it reaches at least 130.

I usually wait until my bike is over 100F, then take it easy until 150 or so.

Re: How long do I let my bike warm up?

This is for a carbureted bike -- FI systems might be different. I put the choke on about halfway (or fully if it's cold out, say in the 30s), start it, let it idle below 3,000 while I check to be sure the turn signals, brake lamps, horn and low/high beams are working. About then (20 seconds or so), the revs go up. I cut the choke and ride off, taking it easy on the bike for the first few miles.

Re: How long do I let my bike warm up?

I do the same on my FI bike.
Kick the fast idle lever until over 100.
Then, when the idle rolls up by itself after getting warm, I back out the fast idle and take off.

Re: How long do I let my bike warm up?

As stated before, make sure the oil temp is up before you thrash it. In my case the oil temp rises intantly to about 1000 degrees!!

I wouldn't take a chance with it, so I'd say 1 minute or more is too long. If you take longer than that to do whatever, stop the engine and finish what you need to do. I always suit up first, then start the bike so that I can ride off as soon as she's ready. Mind you, that's just at idle. If you're keeping the revs at the recommended 2000-3000 rpm during warm up then things should be fine.

Re: How long do I let my bike warm up?

Jon T, you're smoking crack, a minute of idling won't do shit to your bike, several minutes of idling isn't good, but only if you do it regularly.

I do the same as a few others, use the choke to keep the revs around 2500-3000 while I zip my jacket up and put my lid on, then I'm good to go, choke off (huh-huh, he chokes off) taking it easy for the first couple of miles to get the oil and tyres up to some kind of temperature.

One of my buddies used to have a Honda NS250 (2 stroke), and he'd kick it over, and thrash the balls off it straight away. It wasn't long before he had to buy new barrels

Re: How long do I let my bike warm up?

I'm the same as Drizzit, wait till 40 - 50c then head off and go easy BUT if you need to bail in a hurry, just keep really low revs till she's ready.
