Clutch free play changes during riding

i just put a new clutch in saturday, (done it 3-4 times before), test rode it, felt fine. by the time i got to work this morning (15 miles) it wouldn't dissengage until the lever was almost to the bar. readjusted it after work, did the same thing going home. it feels just like a car that has a bad slave cylinder, but only after a few miles of riding. it does not slip at all in high gear, or high rpm low gears. i replaced the clutch hub, springs, plates, and fibers so all that should be good. im positive its in the pushrod adjustment, but i've done just like the book said-turn the screw in until you feel resistence, then back out 1.25 turns, then adjust the cable for free play. would having that screw too far in cause this, or too far out? i'm at a loss here.
