At the Ducati dealership this morning...

I swung by my local Ducati dealership this morning and I was looking at the Monster 620. Has anyone ever had the opportunity to compare this bike to the SV650? I know this is the wrong forum to ask about a ducati, but any opinions about it?

Re: At the Ducati dealership this morning...

I had a 2001, Monster. It was an excellent starter bike. It had a sprocket change when I bought it, I cut the pipes and jetted it. It ran pretty good, nothing like my Gix, if this is your first bike, then at least you are smart enough to consider other things than the Gix. The main problem was the parts were outrageous. Also my clutch started slipping around 7k miles and the timing belts were going to need to be replaced this year if I kept it. When considering maintanence, I would go with a Jap bike. good luck.

Re: At the Ducati dealership this morning...

SixStang, in terms of power, the new monster 800 and Supersport 800 are closer to the SV. Remember the SV is watercooled and the 2 valve ducs are aircooled so they have to run a bit cooler. In terms of styling and ride characteristics, the monster is similar to the SV and the SS's are similar to the SVS's.

I have a Supersport 750 and absolutely love it, 18K on the odometer and it's still running like a champ. They are okay starter bikes and the insurance on them is dirt cheap, but as previously stated if you drop them or need to replace anything, then be ready to drop some $$$. I pay $300 a year for full coverage with $250 deductibles and I'm only 22.

Re: At the Ducati dealership this morning...

yeah the dealer scared me a bit when he said the gas tank on the new 620sport was $1500 if i dented it!! i'm not so concerned with the power, the new 2003 620 monster will be plenty. the dealer also told me that the side fairing on the sport was soemthing like $500 alone. but he was including maintainence on it for 2 years (and the bike was $7 grand). i am thinking about the sport and removing the plastics until i get more comfortable with the bike, i like the ridign position a bit better and i think overall it has a better appearance. with the maintainence included and the discount i was offered, the sport seems to be a very good deal for a bike from such a great manufaturer.

Re: At the Ducati dealership this morning...

It's good to see someone who isn't concerned with power. like you said the body panels are ultra expensive, I dropped mine in the garage and nearly cried when I picked it up and saw the tiny dent in the tank and the scratch on the fairing. All I could think was "Wonder how much that is going to cost to replace?" LOL

Nope, I didn't buy my bike from them, but I do buy almost all my parts there. They are a great bunch of guys, my father gets all his parts and stuff there as well. They are very friendly and very knowledgable.
