02\' 750 - Optimum Gearing Choice?

I have a 2002 GSX-R 750 with many of the standard mods and am looking at converting to a 520 chain/sprocket set-up. Right now i am running a 16/47 with the stock 525 chain.

Basically what i am looking for is something a little quicker in the first few gears (something to pull wheelies without popping the clutch as much... the bike can do it under just power but slightly struggles (i guess i could learn some more techniques also... but that is another topic)) but likewise not to kill my top speed that much. However, i would sacrafice some top-speed for acceleration.

What does everyone reccomend?

Thanks all....

Aaron

*** Also if anyone has suggestions/info/input on brand of spark plugs, K&N filters, and any other "cheaper" tune, tip, trick, or whatnot... fell free to tell me! Thanks!

Re: 02\' 750 - Optimum Gearing Choice?

youve got the generally considered best gearing. personally i like -1, +1. but thier so close anyway. youll probably notice a slight difference in power when you switch to the 520 due to weight lose but itll be slight if any. as for cheap tuner stuff i use cr9ek ( thiers no way to convince me to spend xtra money on iridiums), bmc race (most people agree k&n does nothing), and weight reduction. what type of other mods do you have. a properly mapped bike can pick up some hp over a poor tune and make all the difference in power delivery. what about the pair and the tre mods. i removed my secondary thottle valve and got gains with that but it runs alot better after some dyno tuning.

I'm interested in this too. I'm still running stock gearing.

ok i'm confused

your running 16/47 on what is stock at 17/42? you've got plenty of gearing. It wasn't until the 2004's did they stary 17/43. Or did I read what your doing wrong.

Re: 02\' 750 - Optimum Gearing Choice?

16/47... okay, i am definately not sure what the count is on the rear sporcket but i know that my front is at 16. In any case i was thinking that when i go to the 520 set-up that i would run 16 in the front and +2 from either the stock set-up or from what mine is now (whether or not they are the same... i'm not 100% sure).

Essentially i am just looking for the imput of anyone available and what people have tried for the 200-2003, 750's.

Hope this clears it up a bit but i guess what i really need to be doing is counting the teeth on that rear...

Re: 02\' 750 - Optimum Gearing Choice?

As far as other mods are concerned... i am running a Yoshi RS-3 pipe (mostly better sound but don't want to drop the dollars for a fully system exhaust), and i do have the TRE and noticed a more crisp throttle response. I have been looking toward the Power Commanders but still just holding off on that for now.

Did removing the secondary throttle valve have any negative effects, either in performance or physically to the engine over a period of time (if you know)? If not, why haven't i heard of more people doing it and how would i go about removing it?

Anyways, thanks for the input and we'll just have to see how it all goes...

Re: 02\' 750 - Optimum Gearing Choice?

ya stock your 17/42 so your -1 +2
the 04's started 17/43

but if your wanting gearing atleast do down one to 16. then add from there

Re: 02\' 750 - Optimum Gearing Choice?

on the o4' 17 in front, 45 in rear is stock. dropping to a 15 and going up to a 47 will allow you to raise it in another geart higher without using the clutch. going to a 520 chain will add 5-7 hp on a 600. any questions tony_e_stephens@msn.com

uh WRONG
a 600 is 16/45
a 750 is 17/43 (04 - 05's)

going -1 is approx 2.5 in the rear not 3. So 3 is more than -1 and +2 is just under -1.

Re: 02\' 750 - Optimum Gearing Choice?

don't know about wheelies but for the track I run 15/44(-2/+2) and it lets me keep up in the straights with some of those liter bikes running stock. Makes it easier for me to pass their slow ass in the corners.
