First time visit, and I love the site. I'm in the market for a 750 GSXR and found a hell of a deal at my bank. It's a repo'd bike that appears to be raced, but seems really clean and runs great. Is there any way to check the VIN & Engine number to see if the are the original. I guess what I'm asking is, should they match. I've got two numbers to don't match and I'm fin with that, except I'd like to verify that the engine is a 750 and not a 600. I'm new to Gixxers, but have an 02 bandit 1200 still so I'm a loyal Suzuki fan. Thanks for your help. The bike would be for my wife, so it wouldn't be driven hard, so I'm not really conserned with it's previous life, especially since I've got free will to test everything out.
Don't sweat it. The VIN and Engine numbers are different. As far as the displacement goes, it should say 749cc on the case somewhere (I forget where or I would tell you) just look closely and you'll find it. Do the numbers on the title match the numbers on the bike? That would be the first indicator if it's original or not. hope that helps.
Thanks for the reply...
I'll need to take the plastic off to look a little closer for the 749.
There isn't a title this bike was new and made into a race bike, the bank should have it, but they don't. They said they can get one, the DMV agreed. Is there anything I should look for that might tell me it's a roach? The bike seems to idle and take off fine, but in the higher RPM's it doesn't seem as smooth. Could that be the GSXR 600 pipe that's causing that? Don't ask me why, but that's what is on there, the stock can for a '01 GSXR 600.
um.. the 600 and 750 cans are the same. The headers are different, but you cant put 600 headers on the 750. What tells you the can is from a 600? In all honesty this bike sounds like it has quite a bit of history. Unless it's very very cheap and you get to SEE the actual title and it matches the frame stay the HELL away from that bike. I'd also ring the DPS and run the EIN as well. If the bike was raced and it's aparent there are mixed and matched parts from other bikes on it there is a very good chance it might have a smoker in it. If you find out it has a stolen motor and you are buying it from the bank... you might even get a way better deal in the end. If its an individual.. I'd just look for another bike elsewhere. What you said sounds like the typical crap theives and shady bitches spew out to potential buyers. I'm overly cautious these days.. there's alot of hot items and hack jobs floating around out there. I bought a clean title bike that looked to be in great condition to later find out it had a stolen motor in it and have it confiscated. I got the bike back minus a motor in the end but... I got a bike minus a motor. Whenever buying a used bike.. ALWAYS check the EIN with the DPS. I dont mean to be preachy but better safe than sorry.
Thanks for the concern, I'm taking all steps to make sure I'm covered. It's from a bank, it's a repo. I can probably get it for $500.00, so I think it's a pretty good deal.
What do you mean by, check the EIN with DPS?
The can has a '01 GSXR 600 written in it in black marker. I figured they'd be the same. They air filter is pretty clogged and having a stock pipe on it, is that enough to cause some roughness on the upper end? Especially if the bike has been tuned for the track. I wonder if a new filter and can will help that out?
Thanks for everyones posts.
I looked up the VIN and it says there are no events, but it's a 2001 600 VIN, it's supposed to be a 750. That could explain the frame modifications that I wasn't sure of, maybe they put the 750 in that frame. Any Idea on how to re-MAP the fuel system and/or determine if it's set-up for 110 fuel?
