A little back story. A buddy sees me working on a bike, he knows I ride. He says, I have two bikes that were left to me. I do not know what they are or what they need. Being pretty good at parting things out and selling on ebay, i say i'll take a look at them, we can figure out what they are worth. We set a date to meet. He answers with sounds good, I think one is a...... G..... S... I finish his sentence XR. I tell him they are pretty plentiful, and probably worth more parted out if it is older. Unless.... Nah couldn't be.... We set a date.
Couple weeks go by, and we meet at his house. We walk around to the backyard and the first bike comes into view. Uncovered sitting outside in the elements. Its a 89 GSX1100 in rough shape. No R. Oh well, i think to myself. This one is going to the part out gods.
The next..... under covers, under a patio. Lift the covers off. First thing i see is a bare bike. No plastic.. But i see a dry clutch.. Is it? could it be? Thinking to myself. Not really familiar with how they look bare, i take a look at the VIN.
GSXR750R. Still a little skeptical, i ask if he has the plastics. The first part he pulls out is the tail section.. Oh yea! Been a while since i've seen one. The last time i remember is when i was picking up my first bike, a regular 86 GSXR750. And wishing i could afford the Limited Edition.
So finally get a chance to work on it. Story is carbs needed to be cleaned up. They they are the only thing missing off bike that i can tell..In parts boxes i find four sets of carbs. I pick the best looking of the bunch. Take one bowl off and do a quick inspect of the jets. Seem pretty clean, so i bolt it back together and put them on the bike. I checked the oil, pulled the plugs, hooked up the battery, dumped some oil in the cylinders to lube them up a little and turn it over.
Quick inspect of electrical, only thing i find is low beams are not working, and side stand idiot light does not turn off. Turn signals do not blink cause open circuits in the front, no front signals.
Get the plugs in. Get the carbs in. Find a gas tank and get some fuel. Pull the choke and........ she fires right off.
She runs! Not really well, but she runs.. She coughs and sputters. smoking like a Texas BBQ shack, oil that i dumped in cylinders.
So, that is where i peel off. Need to research a little. Figure out which are the stock carbs.
After all that... here comes the question.
Which of these carb racks are the stock ones? pics to come.
Didn't the Limited's have a different speedo? Been a really long time, but i remember something being different. Searching through the forums i read something about heal gaurd? left side is missing i think.
Congrats on the bike. Looks like a great grab. I should have a set of original carbs later this week so I can tell you which ones are the original ones if someone doesn't answer the question sooner.
The gauges themselves look correct, but I don't think the gauge surrounds are correct. I think they should look like this.
the 28A10 are the cali 31mm carbs so the stock carbs for a cali model of that bike
the 48b21 i have no clue i was thinking possibly Katana 750 but the manual for rkatana 750 i have is Haynes so it's trash lol i haven't been able to find a factory one of those yet!
Edit:
Very nice bike. The first GSX-R i ever saw up close and being ridden was in 1988 and it was a Limited, i can still picture it. I was 12 and dad had a GS1100E that had been built he got an 87 1100 shortly there after.
Edit2: that looks to be the frame off a set of 1100 gauges, the gauges aren't 1100
