ok so my girl is a bartender and apparently her boss is saying that at the end of the shifts on friday and saturday night that the bartenders have to pay up 50bucks from each bar (2 bars at the establishment) to pay for promoting the bar....
Now my question would be if thats legal or has anyone thats in the field heard of anything like this done in any other bar....
i was under the assumption that its not the bartenders responsibility to pay out of pocket to pay for promotion for the bar...
isnt this the owners responsibility as a bar owner to pay and have the bar promoted??? this doesnt make sense to me, and no the bartenders dont own any stock on the bar...so again im trying to figure out if this is even legal as no other bars near this one is doing anything like this...
any and all advice help from anyone that might know anything about this please chime in... thanks again

My girl used to work there while back she still knows a couple people there and I went to school with a couple of the bartenders that work there
That Fridays is much better than the one in Springfield never heard of a Fridays needing police outside on a Friday and sat night because of fights and the bullshit there at night!!
ask her if she knows a guy by the name of gabi...your right about the spingfield one though...i went in there just once and said ill never go in there again..
I spent many of nights in Watchung Fridays, WELL above the legal limit. Luckily I wasnt driving. That was a VERY long time ago though.
Bars like that will never have anything like that. Smaller local bars might, but I am sure that would have to be discussed prior to employment.
Is it Black Thorn? I spent plenty of drunken nights in that place too, lmao. I might even have a connection to some higher ups in that place.
I have been to just about every bar in Union County, either drinking or shooting pool. I played on a league for a few years out of an Irish pub in Roselle Park.

@squale that's pretty funny you know gabi lol yes that's her partner in crime at the bar she works at with said issue and problem they worked together at Fridays and now work together at the bar they work at now....
@rich no not black thorn that's a decent bar I would post up the name of the bar she works but she asked me not to put it up just in case....
I just don't think it's fair that you take money from the bartenders at the end of there shifts to pay for promotions when that should be the owners responsility to pay for that

Yeah, it doesn't sound right. I am gonna see what I can find out for you.
I can't think of any other bars around here with 2 bars so I am out of guesses, lol.
I would suggest for her to ask why it is only the Fri and Sat shifts. And also tell her to ask for a receipt of her payment to the bar for advertising so she can claim it on her tax return as work related promotional expenses. That is $2600 a year if she only works Fri OR Sat. $5200 if she does both days.

I've been in the restaurant business for 20 years. What they're doing is totally illegal. Tipped employees have the right to all their tips. The house or managers cannot touch any of that. There's been countless court cases that back this. It's not only illegal but morally wrong.
