How the hell do I get these back together?!

Took the starter and idle gears apart during part of a winter project and now cant figure for the life of me how to get the 2 idle gears to mesh. I'm sure there is a trick to it- I just dont know it.
Any help would be great

I used a mallet... lol

nah I had just a slight issue so I just kept fiddlin until they lined up and meshed, I think maybe I rolled one of the gears while I was inserting? something like that, its the one where the basket teeth want to hit the case right?

Install it in pieces, so that the washer and clears the gear.
